Painting Guitar Necks

I have a Strat-Style Guitar Neck which needs customizing. I intend to airbrush a black paint from the bottom of the neck, fading out in the middle, so the top half of the neck is the exposed wood. The problem is, I don't know the correct process. Obviously, I don't want to damage the fretboard when doing this, so i know I have to mask that off, but what would be the best method to apply the paint, and apply clear coat, so it is as smooth as it originally was? I'll also be spraying my Custom trademark on the headstock using a Stencil.

Any help is greatly appreciated
