CISPA Got Passed Today

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentis...nternet-privacy

This is not a good thing.

Quote:
Companies have new rights to monitor user actions and share data including potentially sensitive user data with the government without a warrant.

Cispa overrides existing privacy law, and grants broad immunities to participating companies.

Information provided to the federal government under Cispa would be exempt from the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and other state laws that could otherwise require disclosure (unless some law other than Cispa already requires its provision to the government).

Cispa's authors argue that the bill contains limitations on how the federal government can use and disclose information by permitting lawsuits against the government. But if a company sends information about a user that is not cyberthreat information, the government agency does not notify the user, only the company.

1. Still needs to be passed by senate.
2. Obama is opposed to it. He's been pushing internet legislation, but he's against it, and he gets the final say.

I should have been more specific. When was this bill suggested/voted for? If it ever happened?

prepare for hyperbole and explanations from people who've never read the bill itself, only played a game of chinese whispers about it's contents.

Not quite. The Senate can choose to ignore a President's veto with a 2/3 vote.

OT:
If this bill doesn't die in the Senate, I'll be very annoyed. Internet privacy is an issue dear to me.

Edit:

Basically, if passed, it'd be legal for companies to pass on information on your internet usage to the government. By itself, that doesn't sound so bad. However, why does the government need to know that stuff? That's private to you.

A 2/3 majority though would mean that senate managed to act in a bipartisan manner. Ergo, it's not something that's realistic.
