Look, to be completely honest, this isn't even going to touch hacktivists. Anyone claiming to be a hacktivist who has even basic knowledge knows not to use personal information when doing anything illegal. Or they should. You think because CISPA passes, Anonymous is going to all be caught in the next few years? They've been going after them already for almost ten years and they've only caught a handful. This bill is like Communism: it sounds all nice and perfect on paper, but everything about it, including its goals, are gonna get lost in translation to reality.

Except it doesn't even sound good on paper. I don't even know where to begin with the type of person who supports a bill like this.

EDIT: at smartalecG94

But what if Obama pulls a NDAA on us and signs it while telling us that he's doing it reluctantly.

Obama was against the NDAA 2012 too and he signed the shit out of that.

Then in true NDAA fashion, everyone will make a huge deal out of nothing and proceed to dramatically misinterpret a simple piece of legislature.

But lawl, I don't know much about this CISPA thing.

For the people OK with the bill...the real problem here is that there is no need for a reason behind the transfer of information. There was an amendment that would have required a warrant, but it was trashed...this is basically staring into the eyes of 1984.

I'm no conspiracy theorist, but this week has shown me that the government has forgotten that they are elected and represent us. They are not predestined or entitled to anything. They are our voice, and they are clearly not listening to we the people. This is a broken system staring down the barrel of complete foregoing of rights.

Ministry of Culture soon to be established...

Exactly...there are no safeguards. It proposes to do one thing, but in essence can be (ab)used in myriad ways.

It's funny because I'd say I'm more left than right, but I see both sides on different issues...I'm for gun control for example. It's just...you get too close to that boundary line that separates mainstream media-fed knowledge and individual thought and your called a conspiracy theorist these days

So can search warrants. So can arrests. So can pretty much everything involved in the legal system. Just because some kids on the internet told you that people could go to jail for looking at porn doesn't mean that you should actually listen to them, because the chances are that they heard it from some other internet kids, who heard it from some other internet kids, who heard it from some guy who lightly skimmed the bill and saw the word internet and saw a chance to get his shitty blog a whole lot of views with some keyboard warrior controversy. Honestly, I'm pretty sure I'm probably the only person on this forum who's actually read the bill and it's absolutely nothing to get riled up about. Any of you can feel free to disagree but I'm going to continue trolling and not getting into a real discussion until one of you actually reads it.

I'm not worried. I know that the government is more than likely not going to waste time randomly searching histories and stuff of random ass people on the off chance that they are doing something illegal.

But the facts stand. I have enough knowledge on the topic, so I'm not gonna engage in a debate over it...if you're all for living under the watchful eye have fun, I just don't understand the logic in allowing legislation like this to even exist in which it is clearly a willful handing over of freedoms.

apart from it's actually not wilfully handing over freedoms. you'd be doing yourself a great favor by actually finding out what the bill says.

Isn't not debating a topic that you feel will severely limit one's rights and you also claim to "have enough knowledge about" counter-productive to your entire point?

Also, I'm reading the recent revision of the bill in full, so I'll have an opinion on it once I'm done.

Read it EDIT: Well, that's nowhere near as bad as people are claiming it is. It doesn't seem like it will really do anything, to be honest. It also feels like the bill is aimed at child trafficking that is set up through online means. I'm not use to reading bills, though, so everyone should give it a good read. Here's what I read:

Read the bill.

Quote:
(1) IN GENERAL-
(A) CYBERSECURITY PROVIDERS - Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a cybersecurity provider, with the express consent of a protected entity for which such cybersecurity provider is providing goods or services for cybersecurity purposes may, for cybersecurity purposes-
(i) use cybersecurity systems to identify and obtain cyber threat information to protect the rights and property of such protected entity; and
(ii) share such cyber thread information with any other entity designated by such protected entity, including, if specifically designated, the Federal Government.
(B) SELF-PROTECTED ENTITIES - Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a self-protected entity may, for cybersecurity purposes-
(i) use cybersecurity systems to identify and obtain cyber thread information to protect the rights and property of such self-protected identity, and
(ii) share such cyber threat information with any other entity, including the Federal Government.

There's obviously a lot more, and all of it is equally confusing to read. I'm picking this bit out because it tl;dr's my issue with it. Notwithstanding (Preposition - In spite of) any other law, (including the fourth amendment) a cybersecurity provider can see what you've been doing on the internet. And share it with other "protected entities" (which the bill defines, cba to go back and see what that refers to) and the Federal Government. I understand it's aimed at hackers, child pornography distributors, etc., but it still supersedes freedom from unwarranted search and seizure as guaranteed by the 4th amendment, more specifically the search part. I'm not okay with that.
