Hyundai suicide ad, too far?

So this just popped up on my news feed.

The advert shows a man who is trying to kill himself using the emissions from his car. The end of the ad shows him leaving his garage with words appearing that reveals the latest car has 100% water emissions.

The woman's blog that triggered the backlash

So, thoughts? Did Hyundai drop the ball or are they justified?

If people get offended by adverts then they need to rethink their life.

Yea pretty much this. People are too easily offended. It's a car commercial for f*cks sake.

That said, it was a good advert. I thought it was going to be a suicide help line ad or something. I think they were going for shock value, so people would talk about it (and it worked).

This.

Anyway, the ad makes a good point. Conventional cars put out emissions that are easily dangerous enough to kill people. Not this car. I like it.

That's AN AWESOME ad. Not only is it funny, but it means the car is safer and more ecological. 10/10!

By that line there, it's obvious to me that it was a bad advertisement.

So many commercials today don't have any punchline until the last few seconds. That's so shitty. The whole commercial could be of a crying baby on a 747 and at the end somehow be about Cialis.

To be OT though, I didn't like the commercial.

Yeah same. I've seen countless ads where I had no clue what it was about until the last two seconds

Yea but think about it. You or me or probably most people who are going to and have posted in this thread have not and would not have seen this commercial. Now here we are discussing Hyundai's new water car. They wanted to advertise it, they succeeded.

They could have considered adding the number for a suicide-hotline or other source of help to the ad. Not that they really went for the classy solution.

Personally, I'm bad enough of a person to admit that the ad amused me. Sure, it's probably inappropriate to air, but my butt remains as of yet to be hurt. (Cue for sam pic to enter >___>)

Only we're not discussing the car, we're discussing the method used in the commercial lol. I agree with you to a point, though--the emotional factor has done its job. Whether or not that makes it right to do is still not decided for me.

I thought the concept was pretty funny actually, but I guess looking good on paper isn't the same as the actual thing.

It was definitely the low ground they took, I'm not saying is a classy ad, just a pretty functional one
