just go for a jazz standard, essential jazz vocabulary right here
i doubt you teacher wants to hear a metal song

something catchy also, most non-jazz fans love that one

So wait, you have to learn and perform it?
You just want to do a standard, then. Don't get too fancy. That way you can do what you want (or can) with it, rather than something tightly arranged/orchestrated.
Take The A Train, Mahna De Carnival, Born To Be Blue, How High The Moon, Misty, something like that.

Kenny Burrell is one cool cat. Non jazz fans will also love Midnight Blue;

Grant Grant green is another cool bluesy jazzer, his version of My Favourite Things is great;
show

edit; Another cool tune appreciated by non jazz fans is Moanin' by Art Blakey - your posting of My Favourite Things reminds me of a great medley version from an Anime that some might recognise;

That Slipknot track reminds me of the Al Di Meola track Flight Over Rio (I think that track is on the album video I posted on the previous page), only a bit funkier and with some lame rap vocals. The first minute, at least.

Umm... no? This is like saying that Yngwie's music is classical music.

In the dark atmosphere? I guess that's kinda in the ear of the beholder, because I think we partly mean emotionally heavy if you know what I mean (and I'm not sure I do )

If we're talking heaviness regardless of genre, this has to be up there;

He lifts elements from classical music, just as Cynic lefts elements from jazz. Maybe you should look up what 'fusion' means.

I don't see how you can sit there and tell me this isn't jazzy at all, unless you're some ****** puritan or some shit.

On a scale of 1-10, that was maybe 2 jazzy. You can't just take vanilla ice cream, throw on some chocolate syrup, and call it chocolate ice cream.

King Of Those Who Know is a weird choice...I'm But A Wave To... or something else off of Focus would have been better suited.

I think you two might be misunderstanding each other, though. Stewie, are you saying it sounds like it's influenced by Jazz, and Kristen, are you saying that it's just not Jazz at all?

Yeah you can. If you stir it together really well, it becomes chocolate ice cream.
