112 Tube Combo for Doom Metal?

As soon as I get a job, I want to save up for a 112 tube combo amp. Any thoughts on which?

I play genres branching from thrash, power, black to some prog metal, but I mainly play doom metal. Favorite bands are Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Electric Wizard and so many obscure bands that I can't remember to list.

I don't really have a budget yet, but when I get a job I'll put back $50 a week for it. I'm going to say 2 months of saving for $400?

Current gear is an Ibanez RG421 with an EMG 81 in the bridge, and a Jackson JTX (telecaster type) with Bartolini pickups, a Peavey Vypyr 15 and a Dunlop Cry Baby 535Q wah.

I would also suggest looking at the Peavey Ultra and Peavey XXX. Similar gain levels to the 6505(Obscenely high) but a different voicing some people find preferable.

NO, NO, NO The 5150/6505 is too tight and modern sounding of an amp for doom. For Doom you want a big low-end that is kinda loose.

Laney AOR would fit the bill great. Sleep used them for years so you know they can do Doom/Stoner just fine. They come in heads or combos and are really cheap 2nd hand.

Heh. Doom, Stoner and their spinoffs/crossovers might be the only metal subgenres where 6505 is not automatically correct answer.

Yeah, I know. I like the 5150, but it is not for everything that requires some dirt.

If this is for playing at home get the Orange Micro Terror and whatever decent 1x12" cabinet is on sale. If you need to play with a band get a Tiny Terror and whatever decent 1x12" cabinet is on sale.

If the actual 6505+ is like the amp model on the Vypyr 15, that's a little too high gain. XXX seems a little closer, but still too high gain.

Orange Micro Terror sounds pretty good, and pretty cheap. Or is it too cheap? And Tiny Terror seems also good, but that much for a 15w?

I have no experience with it, but you will need a speaker cab if you buy the micro-terror

Laney AOR are great amps for what you want

This.

Also consider a less "modern" guitar for doom work. An Epi LP or SG works great for me and my other guitarist..

I'm probably going to also buy a G400 then trade it and some money for a Gibson Faded further along the line. So that's around $300 for the Laney AOR 50w combo, then $200 for the G400, and what distortion pedal? I'm thinking Big Muff from what I heard about it. So around $550 total. Am I headed in the right direction?

EDIT: It seems that the Laney is pretty rare, with only 1 112 combo on GC and nowhere else. The GC one will probably be gone before I get the money. Anything similar and more available?

The Micro Terror is cheap because itís a practice and recording amp with a solid-state power amp. Keeps the price down, but you canít really do much with it live.

The Tiny Terror isnít cheap because Orange is still doing the assembly (parts are Chinese) in the UK.

With the AOR you shouldn't need any od/distortion pedals at all, the amp has enough of its own. A good boost would be helpful, but not needed.

The laneys aren't exactly rare, but they are from the 1980's so it is slim pickins.

how long till you get the money together?

Will probably take me a month to find a job, then at min wage I'll be putting back $50 a week but if bigger check I'll put more back. So I'm guessing all together by Christmas?
That's for everything. Main priority is the amp, and that's probably mid-October early-November.

well they do make the AOR head if there are no combo's by the time you have the money.

If you wanted to go head and cab, the Peavey Windsor head is $250 used (it is a JCM800 type amp) and get a decent used 2x12 cab

One of the newer Marshall DSL40c could be worth looking into

The Krank Chadwick 2x12 combo sells for $400-$500 on www.guitarcenter.com/usedgear

What about Valveking? Mine isnt in working condition now so I cant check it how well it would work for doom but the sound without the built in SS gain boost it is definetly quite loose and low gainish. With a fuzz pedal I imagine it would be great for Stoner atleast. With a tubescreamer as clean boost it does tight Thrash sound too.
