New OD for Jesus?

Hello guys,

Just ditched my SD-1 and I'm looking for a 'better' OD to replace it.
Overall I'd like a better bypass as well as more tone-shaping options than a tone-knob ideally. The SD-1 sucked tone while off and cut off the bass just a little too much while not really thickening up the mids, that's also why I'd prefer a little bit more of an EQ-section.
It's going to be used to boost my SL-X, so I don't need crazy amounts of gain.
Budget is <100, can also look used, although the used market around here is not THAT big.

Mostly considering the Hardwire CM-2 or some Harley Benton/Joyo drive-pedals, but I have no chance to try any of them.

What do you guys suggest?

I might be stating the obvious, but have you considered a used TS9 of maybe the digitech copy (Bad Monkey)? I have had both pedals, and found them very capable of delivering just the boost your tubes need. They are also under EUR 100,00, especially used.

if you want the eq options on an sd1- or tubescreamer-style od you don't have all that many options for under 100 euros, i'm guessing. off the top of my head, there are the bad monkey and hardwire which have already been mentioned; there's also the badass od by mxr. there are probably some other obvious ones i'm forgetting.

Well, I said 'ideally'.

What I mostly want from the pedal is not a huge bass-cut-off, a thick midrange and a good bypass.

i'm not sure if that's really possible with some more EQ control. a ts's midrange is arguably more of a bass (and treble) cut than a mid boost, for example.

I thought this was gonna be a what OD for P&W toanz thread and was going to send you to TGP.

Dave, the frequency shaping in a TS is a bass/treble cut below ~800Hz and above ~3.2kHz respectively. That said, the MXR Custom Badass is a traditional TS9/SD-1 circuit with an active bass control after clipping, and could probably do what you want. The Bad Monkey isn't really close to a TS circuit wise, but it can cop the tones, and again has active bass/treble controls after clipping. The Hardwire is basically the same circuit, but lower noise, true bypass (with a relay!) and with a switch to bump up the gain.

^ that's what i thought when i first saw the thread title and before i realised JC had started the thread

And thanks for the info on the circuits . i thought the BM was (reasonably) close to a TS-style circuit when i last looked at the schematic, but I probably got confused, you know way more about it than i do

A TS9 is pretty ****in midsy, but it does mess with the bass a bit. perhaps a way huge green rhino? it has a frequency adjuster knob.

Bad Monkey. I used to have a SD 1 and changed to the BM - massive improvement. I even use it on bass and it sounds fantastic.

well. i would suggest a tube screamer clone, however, you say you want more EQ options.

i still recommend my pedal, a cmat mods signa drive, which has 3 "modes" that do change the EQ. however, you are in austria.

what availability so you have to mainstream gear?

Just throwing it out there, I've used an EQ as a boost before and it worked pretty well and its gonna have more tone shaping options then about any OD

I upgraded my SD-1 to the MXR M77 Custom Badass Modified OD.

It sounds like an SD-1, just a little quieter, and much more tone shaping ability.

Tried that one and it was OK, but I found something arguably 'better' - better for myself at least.
