neck pickup suggestions

hi guys,

so, i just bought a custom carvin which is incredible. there are 2 minor gripes which i have, mostly because i have picky tastes, but i think 1 item that can improve is the neck pup. and most of that is probably my playing and the rig that i run through.

however, almost every neck pup i have ever used i find great and full for cleans but muddy with OD. i also find most neck pups seriously lack harmonics compared to the bridge.

i was thinking of some options for a neck pup to start. heres where i am looking for:

- i play almost anything i think sounds good, from classic rock, pop, to rock, to jazz, to punk, to metalish stuff

- my carvin splits coils, and i REALLY like my both pups on tone, so a good split coil tone is essential.

- preferably a lot of clarity and harmonics, equally well for OD and cleans

- current neck pup is 7.6K Ohms, current bridge is 13.6 k Ohms. both are relatively the same "volume" but the bridge is definitely brighter, hotter, and meaner! i would like a good balance.

price:

i think i can rock the bridge pup for a while, i think i will shop for a single pup price. i would like to keep it under 150 for a single pup. so really, thats most things.

Desires/ Turnoffs:

i designed my guitar with 2 black bobbins. so, no covers, no zebras. not saying looks are everything, but i built my guitar custom, and a lot went into everything both looks and feel.

i really dislike seymour duncan for putting SEYMOUR DUNCAN right on the pickup. thats a turnoff for me. not a deal breaker, but honestly, i would most likely take a knife and scratch off the seymour duncan i hate that so much. so yeah, kinda don't want it.

Thanks,

Ikey_

If you're not completely averse to Duncans, you could look at a '59 or Jazz. Dimarzio Air Norton is a good option too.

Jazz is basically what he's already got.

Many to choose from the dimarzio line-up. Air Norton, Air Classic, PAF Pro are some to look into.

From the SD side there's the PATB-1(looks unique in a way), Full Shred neck(normal look). Ordering from them directly can get you a pickup without the logo. The logo is supposed to be easy to get off, but I haven't bothered taking them off of mine.

right. i am sure if i want the tone, its not that big of a deterrent.

I've been looking a lot at the dimarzio line. some good stuff, but hard to choose. another reason i posed on here was for custom or boutique suggestions. i feel like up to $150 a pup opens doors into the boutique world. a lot of boutique sets are 150 for singles or 300 a set. anything beyond that is crazy, probably like linty fralin or PRS aftermarket or something.

Why not just call Fralin and ask?

If you decide on a Seymour Duncan, just give them a call. They'll send you any pup with no logo, no big deal whatsoever. I think small custom stuff like this adds about $10 to the shelf price.

But some of their pickups are offered without logos regardless. I know the '59 is, Jazz probably is as well.

Dimarzio paf pros are very good sounding
very full and rich with overdrive.

What about a SD Pearly Gates? They come in black but they do have Seymour Duncan written on them. What's your beef with that anyway?
