Time Signatures

well, there are the obvious
4/4
3/4
6/8

what other time signatures do you guys use?

another question......what is the time signature for pink floyd's "money"? I listened to it and I seem to get a 7 count.
I really wanna know if I'm counting that off correctly.

There is also 2/4 time or "cut time." But I don't listen to Pink Floyd, sorry.

w000t ... a thread on time signatures .... and whats even more fun ODD time signatures ... w000t w000t

*fingers hover over the keyboard anxiously .... not knowing what to type first*

ok ... first off theres even and odd time signatures ..

odd signatures are ones you cant divide by 2 or 3

4/4 and 2/4 are not odd cause they can be subdivided equally by 2 (2/4=2 quarter notes ,4/4= 2 half notes )

3/4 , 3/8 are fine , cause they can be divided by 3 (3/4 =3 quarter notes , 3/8 = 3 eighth notes )

and at the same time 6/8 , 9/8 aren't odd either cause they're grouped in a 3 eighth note pulse so can therefore be divided by 2 and 3 (6/8 = 2 groups of 3 eight notes .... 9/8 = 3 groups of 3 eighth notes ..... 12/8 .. well you get the point.)

odd meter on the other hand , well that cant be divided into even groups .... so therefore the count gets all messy , but theres a way to simplify

odd time signatures include
5/4 - Take five : by Dave Brubeck
7/4 - Money : by Pink Floyd, Spoonman : By Soundgarden
7/8 - ? lol
5/8
11/8
etc...

for example ... lets take "money " by pink floyed , brought up by Dmal

yes that song is in 7/4 but as far as the count goes, you're best bet (and the way people actually count it ) would be 2 groups of 2 and one of 3

2+2+3=7

so like so ... 1 2 1 2 1 2 3

its easier this way than counting 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 , and it grooves more or flows easier to count this way seeing as we have 1 syllable counts (1,2 & 3 all being one syllable ...... 7 having 2 syllables ) if we count 2 syllables on one beat it would get confusing .... try it , most mess up at first or after a couple measures ...i mean , if you counted 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 .... then youd be counting six 1 syllable counts, and then all of a sudden on the last beat your brain has to count 2 syllables on a beat .

its not that hard actually, but its easier to count/group in a 2+2+3 note grouping ...

for more odd time **** , tool is great for that ... umm ... uhh ..oooh , Yes is great , Rush , King Crimson ... Dream Theater ... all those prog bands use ****ed up signatures.

just remember your count should be in groupings of 2+3

11/8 = 123,123,123,12 l 123,123,123,12 l etc..
5/5 = 12,123 l 12,123 etc...

some musicians even like counting 9/8 as 12,12,12,123 l 12,12,12,123 just cause it grooves more ... but you could count it as 123,123,123, l 123,123,123 l just as succesfully ..

well i know this wasnt a "eplain time signatures" thread , but alas ... i can't be halped. and hopefully it helped those of you who knew what they were, to understand them a little bit better ...

peace !!.

thanx for the interesting thread Dmal

There's also 2/2 and probably some more, if I would find my books with music theory, I would sum up the rest, by I seem to have lost them...

i was counting money off as 1231234, but your count off sounds easier.
and by the way, spoonman wouldn't be 7/8? just trying to count it in my head it sounds different.

and hell yeah, explain all the duple triple quadruple simple/compound stuff. I wanna learn something new, and when I start throwing that stuff out at the band, I wanna watch em freak out. MUAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!

about the spoonman thing, I've been counting it off in my head since you posted it (musical brainwashing at it's finest)and 7/4 now makes sense. I started by counting the guitar riff as a 14 count (12312312312312=14/4?), but if I count it as 1212123 like you suggest, it works well. The only thing I don't understand is that in a 7/4 count it seems to break the phrase in half. Am I still counting incorrectly, or is it ok to end a measure in the middle of a phrase?
I wish I had it to listen to. trying to figure that stuff out with just the music in my head is murderous.

I did take a singing class a couple years ago, but I forgot and I am asking: What are time signatures and how do you use them? Metronome? tempo?

Time Signatures, I just play something, probably in 106/953 or something......

How about 12/4, 2/2, 1/4, 5/4, 127/128....well, I never bother with them....I just play.
