Only 300 posts in this thread in a year. Does anyone else simply stopped caring about DT?

Petrucci will probably have some significant news on his solo album before too long, and the next DT album shouldn't be too long after that. The thread will probably liven up.

Meh..I wouldn't get hopes up about it getting too lively. I know I haven't picked up anything from them since Systematic Chaos.....Is there anything worth getting?

^ I'd say the latest (A Dramatic Turn of Events) is definitely worth getting, I think it's easily better than both Systematic Chaos and BC&SL.

I'll check it out then. I liked most of Systematic Chaos, but I kind of branched out away from Dream Theater after that so I've kind of lost touch.

I know many hardcore fans who were disappointed with it, but I rather liked some stuff off of BC&SL. The Count of Tuscany is a great piece, as was The Best of Times. TBOT is one of my favorite DT songs. Very personal lyrics, and a really epic solo at the end. I was quite impressed with ADTOE. James sounds great these days and it really shows on the album. Breaking All Illusions is my favorite piece off of it. I cannot wait to see the new DVD. No one can hit it out of the park every album, but these guys are too good not to give it a chance.

That gives me a little more hope. A broader area to explore anyway. Thanks.

Actually, he posted something about his solo album on his Facebook. Something about recording or demoing or something. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Edit: Here it is!

"Metropolis pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper" from the same album ("Images and Words") is a big classic and fan favourite. Also, check out their 23-minute opus "A Change of Seasons", which is by fans widely regarded as one of their (if not the) most musically and lyrically complete songs (I don't think they've ever topped ACoS lyric-wise.)

If you enjoy that, seek out the entire "Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory" and "Images and Words". Stay clear of "Falling Into Infinity" until you know you like them, because it is overall mediocre and their worst effort (hampered by producers and what-not, seek out the "Falling Into Infinity Demos" on the Ytse-Jam label instead.) The few good songs from that album are usually well represented on their live albums and compilation.

Their later albums ("Systematic Chaos" and onward) have adopted a more metallic sound, giving heavier riffs and Hetfield-esque vocals larger space; they're still very proggy, with odd time signatures, long songs and huge instrumental passages.

How I rank their albums*:
1. Metropolis pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory *****
2. Images and Words *****
3. Awake ****½
4. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence ****
5. Octavarium ****
6. Train of Thought ****
7. Systematic Chaos ***½
8. Black Clouds and Silver Linings ***½
9. A Dramatic Turn of Events ***
10. Falling Into Infinity **½

*having been a fan of them for about 10 years, I still haven't heard their debut "When Dream and Day Unite" in it's entirety . "Ytse Jam" rules, though.

Have fun, and I hope this helps!

Also, if you like Dream Theater, check out Symphony X as well. They're a great progressive metal band; their later efforts like "Paradise Lost" and "The Iconoclast" have more groove in their riffs than their earlier, which have a more blatantly epic, borderline power metal sound.

So you think DT is going downhill based on the way you have ranked their albums?

such an immense band.

I havent listened to them in awhile. Been about 4 years since I got into them.

Nothing really relevant here, just nostalgiaing, wishing I could rediscover them because it was so fun having so much material to dive into. And then most of the things I didn't like eventually grew on me.

I can see where he's coming from. They have put less and less effort into their albums over the years. I really don't get how a band can write 8 songs, and put those 8 songs on an album. Why isn't there anyone in DT saying: well let's write like 15 songs and then pick out the best. Because Wither isn't good enough to be on any record. You can't just be satisfied with every riff or song you write.

Have to agree with this. Wither was kind of cool at first, but it got very stale and annoying very quickly because of the pop structure. I always skip the track when I hear the first few notes.

Wither sounds like a song they made to be a single. I don't think it's a terrible song, but it's definitely not on my DT playlist.
