Pentatonic Scale

A pentatonic scale in a scale based on 5 tones instead of 7.

Here is a link to the pentatonic scale patterns.

Pentatonic Scale Patterns

There is a wealth of information regarding scales of all types on this site. Take the time to look around a bit.

Here is the Minor Pentatonic Scale and it's modes. All intervallic values are in relation to the Major Scale structure. F Major is used for an example. I chose "F" because you can begin the patterns on the First Fret of the Sixth String. These patterns can be applied to the Ionian Mode of the Major scales.

To derive the minor pentatonic scale and modes from the major scale pattern.

F Major scale

The F Major Scale structure

Tones: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Notes: F G A Bb C D E

To get the minor pentatonic scale structure apply the following:

Tones 2 and 6 are excluded.
Flat the 3rd tone and the 7th tone.

Tones: 1 b3 4 5 b7
Notes: F Ab Bb C Eb

Minor Pentatonic Scale Mode II (Major Pentatonic).
Tones 4 and 7 are excluded.

Tones: 1 2 3 5 6
Notes: F G A C D

Minor Pentatonic Scale Mode III.
Tones 3 and 6 are excluded.
Flat tone 7.

Tones: 1 2 4 5 b7
Notes: F G A# C Eb

Minor Scale Pentatonic Scale Mode IV.
Tones 2 and 5 are excluded.
Flat tone 3, 6, and 7

Tones: 1 b3 4 b6 b7
Notes: F Ab Bb Db Eb

Minor Scale Pentatonic Scale Mode V.
Tone 3 and 7 are excluded.

Tones: 1 2 4 5 6
Notes: F G A# C D

Here is a little theory behind the Pentatonic scale for you to analyze. Hope this helps you out. If you need to know how to play these scales on your guitar see the link above. If that does not help, ask here and I will tab out the patterns I use. If you are confused, post here again and I will try to make it clearer.

Regards

Very good lesson SRC.
Since our student doesn't know what the pentatonics are, I'll try to simplify and explain it further.
Make sure you read through the major scale and you will understand better the pentatonics.

The major scale, or Ionian scale, is the foundation of the modes and the pentatonics and many other scales.

If you sing "do re mi fa so la ti do", you are basically singing the major scale. It is based on 7 notes, as SRC pointed out.
Here is the F major scale tabbed out. You will also hear it called the F scale or F Ionian.

1----------------------------------------------------3--5--6--
2------------------------------------------3--5--6------------
3--------------------------------2--3--5----------------------
4----------------------2--3--5--------------------------------
5------------1--3--5------------------------------------------
6--1--3--5----------------------------------------------------

The F Major Scale structure

Tones:............1..2...3...4....5..6...7..(8 or octave)
Notes:............F..G..A..Bb..C..D..E..(F)
interval pattern:.W,W,1/2,W,W,W,1/2

the interval pattern basically shows the number of frets between notes played. W=whole step, which is 2 frets. 1/2=half step, which is one fret up. The interval pattern is the same in the major scale, regardless of the key. So if you are playing G major, you move the pattern that is tabbed out above to start on the 3rd fret.

The pentatonics are almost the same. But instead of 7 notes, there are only 5.
it is tabbed out as follows:

F pentatonic scale ( Fmaj pentatonic)

1--------------------------------1--3--
2--------------------------1--3--------
3--------------------0--2--------------
4--------------0--3--------------------
5--------0--3--------------------------
6--1--3--------------------------------

Tones: 1 2 3 5 6
Notes: F G A C D
interval pattern: W, W, W1/2, W, W1/2

Notice that the interval pattern shows one and a half steps between the A and C, and the D and F. This is because there is no 4 or 7 as SRC pointed out earlier.
Just like the F Ionian, the F pentatonic pattern can be moved to another key and the pattern will remain the same. So if you move it up to the 3rd fret, you will get the G pentatonic:

1---------------------------3-5---
2----------------------3-5--------
3-----------------2-4-------------
4------------2-5------------------
5-------2-5-----------------------
6--3-5----------------------------

there are 4 other patterns to the pentatonic scale. If you click on the link in SRC's post, you can see them all there with a brief explanation. They are tabbed out in the Key of G.

Thanks for referencing the link, SRC. I was starting to wonder if anyone ever clicked on them.
