Like the name of the thread suggests, what are some good rap songs to start me off? I haven't heard anything that's not mainstream and I'm sure there's great stuff. Didn't see a reccommendation thread here, so here's my request. Thanks in advance.

listen to old rap like 2pac and BIG, new rap like nelly and lil jon is HORRIBLE. some good rap is 2pac, BIG, dr.dre, eminem, nas, obie trice, snoop dogg,NWA,G Unit, the game, D 12, and 50 cent. those are some good rappers (these are all in my opinion)
to start off, try listening to 2pac, becasue he is considered one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, rapper of all time.

Rap sucks! There is thing called underground hip hop. Artist that MTV and FAME. Atomsphere, KRSONE, Jurasic 5, Living Legends, Sage Francis, and Rakim and Eric 5. Stay away from MTV and radio music. You rather have a real women not porn mag.

Ya, I was wondering too, wtf? First you give a normal reccommendation thanks a lot but then you go flame Slayer indirectly. Have an open mind, listen to stuff and respect other peoples preferences. Jeeze, I make a thread about rap and get ******s within a few minutes. Ya thanks for telling me rap sucks, I came in here to get some and someone has the nerve to go tell me that. I just want something different. ![]() EDIT: to hellcat28. I didn't say I want rap from MTV. I said good rap. Period. Not hip-hop. Read the title and the post. If you're not going to be helpful then don't post although I'll check those out anyways.

Has anyone else noticed that, in any Rap thread, all the people who like rap type properly and eloquently, whereas all the people who claim that rap is bad type like complete ****ing morons?
Anyway, try The Goats, they're a rap band with proper instruments and everything, as are Ozomatli, The Roots. Dr Octagon and Dr Dooom are bloody good (they're both Kool Keith). As for older stuff, you can't go wrong with Dre's The Chronic or Doggystyle by Snoop Doggy Dogg. Look into The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick too, he's a brilliant rapper and about a million times funnier than Eminem.

the only rapper that anyone should listen to is nas. everything else...**** it.
he is the only rapper that doesnt talk about crunk juice (eww). he has a message in each song. manistream rap is junk now. i recommend any (good) music lover to listed to just one of his songs. 'the world is yours' is my fav. OLD SCHOOL BEE-YOTCH!

Staring At The World Through My Rear View by Tupac Shakur - effing brilliant.
IMO, Tupac has to be the very very top of the rap tree everytime, with Changes being right at the very very top - in other words - it's good shit.

Check out some Mos Def, Common, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Ice Cube, Xzibit (SOME, you may not like his more gangster tracks), NWA ( of course), Joe Budden, Nas, Immortal Technique, Tech N9ne, Slick Rick, KRS-One, Public Enemy, Sage Francis, Dre (his lyrics may not always be the greatest, but his beats easily compensate), Rakim, Ras Kass, Jedi Mind Tricks, yadda yadda yadda.

He played on a lot of the earlier guitar-based ones (Fight For Your Right, No Sleep Till Brooklyn etc.) as they were being produced by Rick Rubin.
