Guitar Setup?
I was wondering if i should go to a guitar store and get my guitar setup since I just bought an ibanez sv470. its been sitting around at its previous owners house for quite some time without playing use. SWhat is a decent price for a guitar setup?
thanks |

Well, do you like how it plays? if the action is too low or too high, tell the guy at a shop.
A little place called hidden music does it for 25 bucks with a string change, i believe. good deal. Most places that are more suburban, will probably do it for like 50 bucks. or, better yet, go online, and learn how to do it. If you think you'll damage it, stop. If you screw up the action, its okay. The guitar tech will just fix the action.

I would suggest you learn how to set it up yourself. It'll save you alot of money and you wont depend of the techie at the shop to sort your action out next time you want to change it or whatnot

if u just orederd a guitar off a web site, u should either get it set up or learn how to set up a guitar for urself. even tho the guitar had a basic set up already, shipping probably changed everything. usually a new guitar is set properly when purchased in a local store. guitars set up from large chain store are hit or miss. u have to play them before u leave, make sure it was done correctly. ok with all that said, if anyone wants to learn how to set up their guitar, they can repost with the model of guitar they own. also, any possible problems they might be having. and im sure phil will go out of his way to help u set that baby up. we can post links or go thru a step by step best suited for u. any and all questions welcome.

on my guitar the action is fine but whenever i hit the 6th or third string hard there is a rattle, it sounds like the tremolo box? is shaking or something. i'm going to see if i can get it fixed.

i just bought my guitar but it isn't the one i played in the shop, i had to get it delivered (complicated but i saved about £70).
my teacher says the truss rod is too tight and the fourth string rattles at the nut. do shops normally charge to fix these problems?

well sometimes a neck adjustment (the truss rod being too tight) is subjective. i just mean that if it was playing well at the shop with a straight neck then perhaps they left it that way. but ur teacher might prefer a slight bow forward. not seeing the neck, im not sure what the teacher is referring to. on the other hand, if u were telling me that the first few frets were buzzing then id have to go with a YES thats a neck that needs adjusting and yea it probably was missed at the shop. ur main concern seems to be a rattling at the nut on the 4th string. there are a few possibilities; the cut is too narrow for the string (a pass with an emery file might settle the string in there better. or u can use a thinner gauge string. the string might be kinked at the nut. the nut cut might be too LOw for that string. the nut might need to be lubed with some pencil graphite. anything that requires work to the guitar should be handled by the shop, on a new guitar, IMO.

what i do if i have a problem with anything, is to try and fix it myself, with guitars you cant lose (unless you do irrepairable damage), if you fail at least you had a go at saving your money, but if you succeed then you've learnt a valuable skill
