He uses a pedal tone lick like this every once in a while, fiddle around with the notes; it's easy to play quickly (legato):
Code:
That's similar to The Reaper's harmonized interlude...thing.

"Building the Church" intro is a pretty sick lick IMO.

If you can play the intro to Building the Church completely and cleanly you are much greater than I, you are even better if you can play the tapping interlude about 2/3 throught the song.
I think Libery and Blue powders main riffs are quite easily recognisable.

That triple neck solo he did in G3 live in Denver has a lot of typical Vai licks

HE tends do a lot of stuff in E Lydian--although i wouldnt say its dysfunctional....---some of his stuff is just likE, E and F# during which he modulates through various tonalities and modes---Whispering a Prayer, Feathers, Boston Rain Melody...
Thanks for completely ignoring my post about Boston Rain Melody in the Random shred forum too guys, i guess its more fun to talk about guitars the majority of us cant afford.

Hey, i just dont have a clue how to count 10s, i personally pay you much attention and think its an awesome song. Anyway, a lot of typical Vai licks are to be found in the riddle. |

On a related subject, try something like this-- -12h16p12--------------------------------------- --------------16-12h16p12-------------12----- -------------------------------15p13h15--------- ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------- Over E major--the sharp fourth--Bb--gives it the classic lydian sound and im sure Vai uses stuff like this all the time... Ive nailed the Boston...'10s' by the way but it was an incredibly laborious process and i really hope i wont have to go through it all again every time i find a new subdivision...

He often ends a legato lick by flicking the whammy bar up then doing a pull off to give a cool vibrato sound, you can hear it sometimes in blue powder. If i see anyone else do that i always associate it with Vai.
