Embarrassing Performances (what're yours?)

Hey everyone,

Just thought this would be a fun topic.

For those of us who have done a few live shows, there's always been one or two that have just gone so miserably it's funny in retrospect. I thought it would be amusing to post all of our respective ****-ups.

Here's mine...

First time playing in front of an audience, my school talent show. It's the auditions. I'm playing my own version of "little wing".

I go up, i think i'm in a pretty good state of mind, i'm doing alright. Suddenly i totally forget half of the song in the heat of the moment. I end up improvising the entire thing and playing the few bits i can remember. But i hit a ton of wrong notes and go out of key a lot.

It still sounds alright and they ask if i'd like to be in the show but i'm so embarrassed i say no.

Thankfully i didn't get to cut up about it and just accepted that i'd learnt a few lessons. I moved on fairly quickly and i started playing a few other shows and now i'm a lot more comfortable. I think my biggest mistake was trying my first show in a comptetitive atmosphere.

Feel free to share your own embarrassing stories. Or we can all just have a good hard laugh at me. Either one.

Cheers
-Falcatarius

basically whenever i play infront of friends, any more than 2 ppl in the room and i forget notes and fumble with the strings, not much of a live performance, i imagine i'd die up on a stage.

Well, I was embarrassed about my manager/rhythm guitarist a few nights ago.

Both are drunk as hell (the manager I don't care about, but my singer gave the rhythm guy hell afterwards). The manager is grinding with every lady in the place... except his wife, who happens to be there. Then he acts so weird our opening act (who was a teen) thought he was gonna get molested.

The rhythm guitarist does the worst rendition of happy birthday ever (think 5 different keys, and sound effects like Hendrix' national anthem. Only sounding very bad). He attempts to sing when he shouldn't, and screws up so badly we have to turn his amp off. At the end of the night he threatens to beat up our bassist.

We are going to have a LOT to discuss next band practice, it was unprofessional and I am overall very disgusted.

I've broken all my strings during a performance before. It was terrible. But I changed guitars and finished the song.

My band's first gig. We were together for FIVE DAYS before playing it.

Wrote and practiced six songs in five days. We were good with timing. We get to the place, set up, and I realize the micstand is WAY too short for me.

I spent the entire performance hunched over uncomfortable and thinking about it. Which led to me messing up a little.

We sounded alright, but I looked like a fool. And the only recording I have of it was visual.

NEVER USE THE HOUSE MIC STAND, BRING YOUR OWN!

I've forgotten the words to "Rock 'n Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" and "Gimme Three Steps" (both incidents occured on separate nights).

I made up words for Rock 'n Roll, real weird stuff too, about a dog. And I just ripped out a solo on the Skynyrd number.

But man, forgetting the words to AC/DC... that was embarrassing, and everyone in the place knew that I wasn't singing the real lyrics...

I've also gone to do the solo (back before my Crybaby) and realized that my effects pedal was on the wrong setting after I started. It was this rectifier setting that was right next to the wah, and it was set to drop-tune the sound, so the solo was in the wrong key. That sounded awful.

Haha actually that reminds me of a dance I did where I forgot the words to Smells Like Teen Spirit. The people who hired us had screwed us, and kicked several band members out, but the kids wanted us to keep playing, so we started playing stuff on the fly that hadn't been practiced in a while.

Funny thing was, even though I COMPLETELY forgot the second verse, no one noticed. I was more angry at myself, really. In a different setting it could have been disasterous, though.

For my first gig I had to learn a whole set (13 songs) in one day and the performance was that evening.

Absoloutly ****ting bricks.

You could have just gotten away with mumbling something incomprehensible if Smells Like Teen Spirit was what you were playing

my band played a show for these kids once , and we were doing relient k's we wish you a merry christmas (since the show was for christmas) and i saw this little girl started to cover her ears and ran around in front of the stage. and once when my band did another show, my bassist bass fell but she was trying to hold it and the sound tech guy came on during the performance and fix the bass for her lol.

i was coming up for my first solo of the night and when i went to change distortion, for a boost, my faulty lead cut out, so i spent the entire time half playing my solo and half kicking the stomp box to put the lead back in place...first live solo for me too!
the moral of the story is, replace broken leads before gigs, ALWAYS

The most embarassing thing that's happened to me would probably be at my band's second gig, and first gig in a proper public venue. I was pretty nervous, and I started to get a little panicky about the fact that none of the crowd were coming up to the stage, and many of them were still sitting down. I had forgotten that was pretty much just the standard practice in this particular venue, so the whole time between songs I kept urging them to stand up and come up to the stage, and I think I may have started yelling a bit...... I also shouted at the sound engineer to turn my keyboard up, which I realised afterwards was pretty rude of me. I guess it wasn't too bad, but I was pretty embarassed about that gig afterwards. We still went down well, thankfully.

Also, there was a time when we were auditioning for a big battle of the bands competition, and most of us had been out drinking pretty heavily the night before..... My voice was struggling quite a bit, and I missed quite a few of the more challenging notes pretty badly. We managed to mess up the structure of a couple of our songs as well. A pretty bad performance really, but somehow we managed to get through to the next round.

There was one gig where my guitarist broke a string mid-way through the performance as well, so we had to stand about for a bit whilst he fetched a spare. That wasn't as embarassing as it could have been though, as I just banged out a few tunes on the keyboard to pass the time.
