60s music
ok so my school's doing a play with a 60s theme and im music director. the music i have to implement needs to be something from the 60s obviously and i've checked out a few bands i'm thinking of using songs from. i've never listened to any of these bands a whole lot but i've heard a few. from anyone that listens to these bands a lot, i need to know 2 or 3 of their best songs so i can check them out cuz i dont wanna wade through tons of music to find them.
Beatles Led Zeppelin The Who Jefferson Airplane Janis Joplin Santana |

I wouldn't recommend Zeppelin, just because they only had studio songs in 69.
Definately get The Doors(like "The End") Jefferson Airplane("White Rabbit")

Beatles - Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, and...I dunno, I Am The Walrus? They're both pretty 'groovy'
Led Zeppelin - They had more of a 70's sound, I'd say, even in '68. The Who - My Generation Jefferson Airplane - Somebody To Love Janis Joplin - Piece Of My Heart (with Big Brother And The Holding Company)

Beatles - Help!
Beatles - Helter Skelter Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone Cream - Sunshine of Your Love The Doors - Break On Through (To The Other Side) The Doors - The End Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe The Who - My Generation The Who - Baba O'Riley You can't go wrong with anything from The Beatles though...so anything Beatles will work. I'm sure there's a tonne more Bob Dylan you could use, but I'm lazy and can't think of too much by him. The Grateful Dead would be a good choice (I think?) as would Creedence Clearwater Revival, though I don't know too much about either of them. There's much more Hendrix you could use and you could even throw in some Johnny Cash. Another group to add to your list would be The Rolling Stones, though I'm not quite a fan of them. |

The Byrds - Turn Turn Turn
Mr Tambourine Man The Who - My Generation I Can't Explain The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard Rolling Stones - Paint it Black Get Off of my Cloud The Yardbirds - Any song will do with them Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe All Along the Watchtower Cream - White Room Sunshine of Your Love Them - Here Comes The Night The Kinks - You Really Got me Or any song by them from the 60's Donovan - Sunshine Superman Sonny & Cher - I Got You Babe Smal Faces - Tin Soldier The Animals - House of The Rising Sun My best advice would be to pick up a decent 60's compilation or watch a decent Vietnam film to get a feel for 60's music. Damn that war had a good soundtrack!!! I mean, it's far more fun destroying peasant villages listening to 'Paint it Black' than Korn or whatever it is you yanks listen to these days! |

I wouldn't recommend them because they suck. The 60's were the best decade, so there's tons of stuff to recommend. The Yardbirds - "Train Kept a' Rollin'" "I'm a Man" The Velvet Underground - "I'm Waiting for the Man" "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'" Jimi Hendrix - "Red House" "Little Wing" The Beatles - "Yellow Submarine" "Octopus's[sic] Garden" Buddy Guy - "Damn Right I Got the Blues" "Sweet Home Chicago" Donovan - "Season of the Witch" "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" C.C.R. - "Up Around the Bend" "Bad Moon Rising" The James Gang - "Funk #49" "The Bomber" The Doors - "I'm Horny I'm Stoned" "Road House Blues" The Guess Who - "No Time" "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" Neil Young - "Ohio" "Down by the River" Iggy Pop and the Stooges - "Gimme Danger" "The Passenger" Black Sabbath - "Iron Man" "Sweet Leaf" Frank Zappa - "Bobby Brown" "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" The Who - "Pinball Wizard" "Who Are You" The Small Faces - "Itchycoo Park" "Tin Soldier" Jeff Beck - "Going Down" "Hi-Ho Silver Lining" The Rolling Stones - "Start Me Up" "Jumpin' Jack Flash" Steppenwolf - "Born to be Wild" "Magic Carpet Ride" Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd - "Love You" "Bike" The Band - "The Weight" "Up on Cripple Creek" The Byrds - "Turn! Turn! Turn!" "Mr. Spaceman" The Zombies - "She's Not There" "Time of the Season" to name a few.

go with these instead of the bands you already have
The Zombies: "This Will Be Our Year" The Rolling Stones: "Gimme Shelter" The Kinks: "Waterloo Sunset" or "Victoria" Donovan: "Season of the Witch" The Stooges: "I Wanna Be Your Dog" MC5: "Kick Out the Jams" (might be a bit much for a school play though )Bob Dylan: "Subterranean Homesick Blues" 13th Floor Elevators: "You're Gonna Miss Me" Sly & The Family Stone: "I Want to Take You Higher" The Band: "The Weight" The Velvet Underground: "There She Goes Again" Just curious, what's the play about? |

Don't get those Zappa songs if you planned on it. Neither of them are from the 60's For Zappa, I would recommend something like Hungry Freaks, Daddy...Trouble Every Day (its a great 60's song, about the watts riots) or something like, Who Needs the Peace Corps? or Absolutely Free.

A lot of Beatles will work perfect.
The Kinks are a good choice as well. Go with You Really Got Me and Nothin in this World Can Stop Me Worryin about this Girl.
