I think Dan is more musically talented. Just listen to the bass lines in older songs, ie "Goodbye Forever," "Cringe," or "As You Were". Also, although Dan has less songs, he wrote, IMO, one of the top three Alk3 songs ever-"Maybe I'll Catch Fire"-as well as "I Lied My Face Off" and "Crawl." I also love all his songs from Good Mourning. Dan has a nicer voice that really complement's Matt's, which is why "Emma" is one of my favorite Alk3 songs.
Matt isn't a great guitarist, but he puts together some great chord progressions to complement Dan's bass work. Obviously, he wrote the majority of Alk3's songs and is the only founding member left, so without him they're non-existent. I love all Matt's lyrics, and he has more of a raspy, punk voice than Dan, which really helps define their sound. Also, Matt brings that dark, Satanic image to the band. In conclusion, Matt is more important to the existance of the band, but without some of Dan's songs in there, as well as his cool basslines, Alkaline Trio would be rather "blah" IMO.

I think Matt's a better lyricist, but like neibnard11890 said, Dan is more musically talented at his instrument. Also I love both their voices, and I can't choose which i think is better. It's a hard choice, but I think Dan's more musically talented.

The Falcon sucks ass.
And I enjoy Matt's voice more, just because I like the slightly croakish, almost tired vibes it sends out, even though Dan's is much smoother. However, as a few of you already said, if one of their voices wasn't there I probably wouldn't like the Alkaline Trio half as much. The "Emma" chorus is all the proof you need. Plus in "Message From Kathlene." And at the end of 100 Stories. Mmmm....
