John Mayer
How do you guys portray him as a blues artist? I like this blues song by him It would be nice if someone tried to tab his licks and solo.

love the guy, only just started listening to his stuff of late, kinda slides between blues and pop...but its a nice mix. perfect example of passionate blues playing and singing...great that we still have guys like john about in a RnB, Rap, Indie musically oriented world.

i really like him. i wouldnt really class him as blues as much as acoustic rock.
his songs are very well put together and in my opinion he is one of the best songwriters around at the molment.

You can tell he was heavily influenced by SRV on that song. There are a couple of licks in there that were in alot of Stevies songs in the 80's.
Very good video.

When he plays pure blues I think he's amazing. But those f*cking cheesy ballad songs just keep coming. He'll never be a true bluesman, since he's obviously still milking the pop crap so little girls come to his concert and cry. What a waste of a genuinely talent player.

I like his music, very talented, makes good music, very 'feel good' kinda music.
I suggest some of you try some of Jason Mraz as well.. very nice

2nd favorite Mayer song of all time. 2nd only to Out of My Mind.
EDIT: I like this version better, it has a nice slide solo.

john is a good guitarist but he doesn´t have a unique style.
his blues covers are alright but to me it is all bit too polished and his mainstream ballad stuff like daughters or your body is a wonderland(oh come on a ****in wonderland-it´s rather baby do you wanna ball....)is not my cup of tea. but he´s def. better than almost 99 % of the other mainstream oriented guys who call themselves a rockband like Nickelback or wahtever. Listen to SRV

i have one word to say...amazing. John Mayer is an amazing musician, and he knows how to play the blues. His songs are full of passion, not only does he play them he feels the blues. Have you heard Stop This Train and Slow Dancing In A Burning Room, as well? and to 2nd robertreilly he is a very very good songwriter. a great of our time

Yes. There is no denying that he is very SRV influenced. Did anyone besides me catch on to how it sounded slightly like Texas Flood? All in all, he's a ****ing awesome guy. In fact, I just bought Continum and that link was the first song i've heard.
This is a great start. Love him.

Can't help but think he sounds cliché without a voice of his own.

i'm sorry, i just can't get into him. he should be playing music that he loves, not playing music that will make him look hip or make him lots of money. when you hear the old bluesmen sing, you can feel their soul, something that i'm pretty sure john mayer does not have.

I think he's great. But he's not a blues guy as much as he wants to be. Not yet anyway. Not until he drops the pop forever, but he never will because that what makes him the money. His pop songs are what the teenagers that love him go for. Although in the long run I think he's gonna lay a huge part in bringing back jazz and blues.

I like all of his stuff, save maybe 20% of "Heavier Things". I dig blues because it hits you at a really basic level, and most people can relate to it. I like pop music because there's something to be admired about being able to write something catchy, something that will stay with you all day.
I think I might feel like I owe him one for opening up the door to Buddy Guy for me. I probably would have gotten to him eventually, but I didn't mind cathing the express train. |

he can play good guitar, and it's all the small things that make him different.
Musical choices not musical abilties. And why does he need to play oldskool blues. I mean you grow older the world evolves, style changes. He's likes to play guitar, and he has some nice things.
