Mainstream?! Prometheus is probably the toughest album to get into by them. The earlier albums(with the exception of IX Equilirbium) is much more easy-listening for those who already are into black metal. This is a bs statement.

I wouldn't call Wrath Of The Tyrant easy listening. They got more polished as they went along. Plus they streamlined, cleaned up their image.
Still, this is a Darkthrone thread. And any calls that they got more polished or mainstream with time is utterly absurd. They're last 4 records "Hate Them", "Sardonic Wrath", "The Cult Is Alive" & "FOAD" are 4 of the most downtrodden, filthy, mongrel sounding records you'll ever hear. |

Just because they don't wear make up and made their cds sound better doesn't make the music more accessable. Prometheus is the most complex work they ever put out and that my friend means that it isn't anywhere near being "mainstream". Don't judge music on the shallow things like production and image.
edit: it is definetely more easy to get into for people who already are into black metal, not easy-listening in a way that everybody can like it.

Actually having a light-heated discussion about Darkthrone at the moment over at the Metalshop forums.
All Darkthrone wins, and the punk influence in the new stuff is really doing it for me these days.

Hello? If I say an album is more mainstream, then I mean it must be more accessible to people who DON'T listen to BM. Anyways, I need to hear the new DT stuff.

Then don't use the term "mainstream", it's wrong. There's nothing mainstream about Prometheus what-so-ever.

Yeah, because clean production and symphonic elements will not appeal more to metal newbz.

My Darkthrone collections fairly growing these days. Transilvanian Hunger has to be my favourite though, has some quality songs. Like Varg's input as well.

I kind of find Transilvanian Hunger repetitive. For me it's A Blaze, then Funeral Moon, then TH.

Didn't Blaze have punk influence?

that's a fair stretch to call anything on Blaze 'punk'. I mean of course you can get pedantic and say all metal boils down to the blues when you trace it back blah blah. but really, there's nothing remotely punky about A Blaze. all I hear is some serious Bathory & Celtic Frost influence in that album.
