Substitute teaching

Has anyone here ever been a substitute teacher? I'm thinking about applying to becoming a short-term sub (no more than 5 days at the same class, usually just one or two). I like the fact that you get to make your own schedule and can request certain days off, and the hours will allow me to keep teaching my guitar students as well.

If anyone has any experiences, please share!

The problem with being a substitute teacher is you barely even know her.

You should've posted this in the anime thread.

yeah, I am doing it right now.
it is easy af.
sometimes very boring, & does not pay super well or anything, but it is chill & better than working retail for minimum wage or something.

Yeah I'm one as long as you get hours it's not too bad, had to deal with some shit head kids today.. Sometimes you fear the future of everything really.. The way some act, it really does turn out like a glorified babysitter lol

I used to be one and it was really fun. I taught kindergarten, 1st grade, and 3rd grade.

the little kids can be kind of overwhelming, in my experience, but the upside is that they accept your authority unconditionally & are usually pretty psyched just to know you. it is a trip -- I like them, but I couldn't spend every day with them.

high school is the most hands-off, naturally, 'cuz no one expects you to show up & be prepared to help kids with chemistry or trigonometry or to kill a mockingbird on 20 minutes notice, so it is pretty much just "here's your assignment, get to it" & -- assuming the class is not completely filled with shitheads -- it is just a matter of circling the room every once in a while to make them focus so that they will think that you think that they were working, & then you can just read or whatever at the front of class in between. hardest thing is getting them to put their damn phones away, but even if they're on their phones, at least their not giving you shit.

middle school sucks 'cuz naturally everyone (or at least all the boys) are complete fucking shitheads who know you have no real authority, and it is still kind of hands on because even though they don't know it, they are still pretty dumb & helpless.

I've been all over the place (grade levels, I mean), but I did a two month temp. position as a building sub at the high school (going in every day, & they would put me wherever they needed a sub), & that was really chill.

although I should say in full disclosure I've worked in relatively affluent suburban districts where most of the kids are probably gonna go to college & shit, so there's some degree of intrinsic motivation -- in other places maybe H.S. is not so chill, so don't believe anything I am telling you.

also being a substitute makes me think about the song "substitute" by the who, I think that is a pretty good song -- the ramones covered it & pete townshend graced them with backing vox, 'cuz the man loves punk rock -- what do you think?

Depends in the districts you wanna substitute at, it could be either chill or shitty.

If the students dont respect their main teacher, they womt respect you
