i can understand how you'd have a democratic view on social issues and a republican view on economic (or vice-versa), but i'm not sure how you'd have a democratic view on business but a republican view on welfare and taxes... surely the democratic view on business takes in a lot of the welfare and taxes stuff?

As in regulation, as in reinstate the Glass-Steagall Act. However people should get a job and do something with their life rather than take government hand-outs.

Not sure why they would do that, but the bankers should not be able to do anything with their account-holder's money. That's how the 2008 recession was started, right?

to a certain extent, yeah, but at the same time if you don't let them do anything with the money, the reason for their starting a bank in the first place has pretty much evaporated

i think clinton was involved in a lot of the deregulation, but don't quote me on that.

If I own or work for a company in solar energy collection or trash collecting or some other eco bs why should I have to compete with the government?

yeah that's what i figured.

and yeah agreed on the competing with the government thing. it's a similar reason to why we shouldn't pay inmates nominal wages to do a job- they may well be putting someone else out of work (unfair competition).

^^ no, if you're gonna let them work pay them properly

also the nhs is a little different- people are being paid at (more or less) market rate. Jackal may well not like the nhs and similar things, either, but my argument was assuming that those on welfare were being forced to work in order to keep receiving said welfare, which would presumably mean that they were being paid at way below market rates. I.e. unfair competition, as i said.

Basically that's what the 'workfare' program did in the US.

And yet I have no idea how it avoids conflict with any sort of minimum wage law. How is it that I should be able to pay you $2/hour of welfare when the least I can legally pay you is much higher than that?
