The only good thing about work is that I get to operate a forklift without a licence every so often. >_>

I wish I got to wear a polo-shirt and jeans. Whenever I'm in the office I wear a hoodie and tracksuit bottoms (although that's partly a strategy to ensure I get left alone).

Suits suck, they restrict your movement, which is fine if you don't need to move but I do.

Wait, perhaps the UK's obesity problems stem from schools imposing movement-restricting blazers on students, preventing them from being as active as they should

I work in the office and do Admin, every so often someone needs me to lift them up on the forklift to get a box down from the racking. It wouldn't be worth getting a licence, and I already do more work than I'm paid for.

The UK is crazy. We went every day in our own clothes and we turned out alright.

Not every school uses uniforms, most are just loose things like "I don't know, just wear something black. Maybe a blazer if you're a prefect or something."

I haven't seen a school that didn't use uniforms. There's plenty variety in the kind of uniforms school issue/insist upon.

Shirt and tie was about as far as most schools round us got until you were in senior years.

Yeah true, it was only the 5th and 6th years wearing em when I was at school, makes since since for the first few years of school you're still growing quickly. We did have I think four different school ties for different years though, I liked that.
I notice many schools get kids to wear green or blue blazers, which is a bit crap because you have to buy em from a specialist store through the school, probably meaning they're more expensive (I know the blazer my brother got through the school was lesser quality and no cheaper than the one I got from some high street shop.
My school wasn't super strict with wearing smart trousers instead of jeans, apart from a couple teachers.

Mine was a brown blazer with a yellow shirt, brown skirt, and yellow and Brown striped tie. Vom.

Only ever worked in one school insisting on ties and blazers these days though. The ties were hung as loosely as possible like necklaces and all the girls wore the blazers backwards like a cross between arm warmers and a strait jacket.

Not worth it - just stick them in black trousers, school polo shirt and a school logo jumper. Less customisation hassle.

I think the school uniforms explain the high teen pregnancy rates. They have to find something with which they can express themselves.

(b) Nope, it wasn't really an academic point . I do know though that I went to school with the girl I was seeing as a teenager, and had she been allowed to wear her own clothes I reckon I would have failed miserably to pay attention to anything else; it was difficult enough as it was.

(c) Arguably, but I don't think so. The reverse point could be made that because it was only one day it was easier, you only had to own one decent outfit. If you had to have a load of them for every day the pressure could be even worse.

(a) yep, of course. that's why i err on the side of fewer rules. Granted that's painting with a pretty broad brush and obviously no rules wouldn't be ideal either.

(b) haha

(c) yep, of course. on the other hand, if you don't even have that one decent outfit (which is arguably the case for the really poor), it's even more apparent how poor you are.

plus i mean all the uniform did where i was was make different things cool. shoes suddenly became the thing where you had to have the cool brand for that year. or schoolbags. etc. etc.

(b) Hell, the restrictions on my clothing as an adult are way worse, now I have to wear a God Damn suit.

(c) Our teachers used to say it would at least make sure we all knew how to wear a tie; which was bullshit because I am constantly having to re-knot my barmens' ties.

(a) i'd call them pretty serious cons And I'd also debate how much they solve anything.

(b) yep suits are lame (apart from those badass mafia-style suits). that being said, you can choose a job where you don't have to wear a suit if you really care that much.

(c) yeah knowing how to tie a tie is a skill of paramount importance.

that should (in theory, lol) dissipate if non-uniform days were the norm, though, surely?

if you ask me it's pretty similar to the drugs thing (and i'd point out that most of your guys in here don't buy that argument regarding drugs)... "drugs are bad because the people selling them are criminals"

well, no shit if they're illegal.

"kids are hyper when non-uniform days are strange and exciting!"

well, no shit if they're strange and exciting. if only there were some way to not make them weird and exciting. I don't see many parents making their kids wear uniforms at home to make them behave better

what, polo shirts are even lamer than suits. at least with some suits, you can look like a badass.

e.g.

there's nothing you can do with a polo shirt. nothing. they just look like crap. it's like someone (that dude who used to troll in here?) said, "hey, my t-shirt's not lame enough, what can i do to make it lamer? I know, i'll put a collar on it and make it out of crappier material." It's kinda like the mullet of clothing.
