I searched and found nothing, so I thought that ENGL deserve to have their own thread. I will add reviews if people wish to submit them and prices of ENGL amps in the UK, USA etc when I have founf prices for them all.

Post what amp you have (and cab if applicable) and the settings you use for a desired style or artist. This includes EQ, Channel, Gain etc.

First topic of debate: Will an ENGL beat a Mesa in terms of versatility? Say what you think and WHY?

I popped a pair of JJ 6L6GC valves into my ENGL the other day (for resons exlpained below) and WOW, talk about a lush, full sound. The valves that come stock with ENGL (much like alot of other amps) are re-branded Sovteks (probs the 5881WXTs, which are not the best valves in the world, lets be honest) and these JJs bring out another dimension of sound in my amp.

On another note, I have recently discovered that although the ENGL site says that this amp takes 5881 valves, it wont take them all. A while ago I had to re-valve my amp due to one of the output valves failing epicly, and after a while of research I ordered a pain of Harma 5881 cryo valves. I plugged them in and there was a quite apparent firey crackley sound which did not vary in volume upon varying any of the controls. I originally thought this was a biasing issue but it is not! It will take 5881/6L6GC tubes, but not 5881/6L6WGC valves. This is an easy mistake to make when ordering new valves as more often than not they don't specify between the two. Easiest way to do it is by looking at the base, the majority of 5881/6L6GC valves have a larger, raised base. Whereas the 5881/6L6WGC valves have a lower base.

I think this problem is down to the fact that the 5881/WGC valves are a lower power rated valve than a 5881/6L6GC, thus the former will only work on amps with a plate volatage of up to 400V, whereas the latter will work up to 500V. The ENGL Screamer putting out on average about 460V was basically frying the Harma 5881 valves and creating that odd crackle.

I thought I would post this here incase anyone else makes the same mistake I did.

Give me 2 months and I'll be the proud owner of an ENGL Thunder 50 combo (the one without reverb because it has better volume control) I absolutely love the thing though. Played it for at least 10 hours at the music store. I've never played anything better than a Screamer from the ENGL range but any Mesa I've played has beat it hands down I'm afraid. But for the cost in the U.K i'd go with ENGL. The Mesa's sound better but not THAT much better imo

eh, try one of the engls closer in price to the mesas... though granted that's pretty hard in ireland. Depends on the tone you're after too, of course. I'd never buy a mesa, just out of principle.

as I said from what i've tried lol. I've never found anything better than a screamer and the only reason i've tried mesas is because my guitar teacher has a bunch (rich b******) he has a roadster, a dual rect and a 5:25 . I'm eager to try a powerball and a fireball out as i've heard great great things

wow, that is a lot of money! as i said, I plain refuse to buy mesas because I know what they go for in the states. I don't like people making money by ripping others off.

i'm not too fussed on the fireball either, lol. I like the blackmore/Savage se (and i assume savage)/SE. I'd like to try the invader too. SE gets very expensive, though, there are possibly better options for the same cash (though few are as versatile).

obviously you may prefer the mesa tone...

Best make clear that footswitches are extra (cheapos at engl.. )

US pricing at www.rocksolidamps.com - better also make clear that in the US you have a lot of other options at similar or even cheaper prices. whereas in europe engl are pretty reasonably priced.

I thought this would be the place to ask this. I play death metal, thrashmetal, and hardcore music and i need something that works with a 4 ohm cab, so I've been thinkin about the Ritchie Blackmore sig head because it's only a few hundred more than the fireball (which doesn't have 4 ohm selectability). Would this be good for it? or should i save a bit more and be way better off with a powerball? thanks in advance.

no because i live in canada, if i were to get one it'd be off musiciansfriend most likely, i would love to try one because after the audio clips i've heard and some of the you-tube vids, i almost like the tone out of the ritchie blackmore sigs better than the powerball, but that's just me. anybody know of any place near vancouver or a little inland where i could try them?

Maken Music in Chicago carries ENGL amps. I was just there this afternoon, they had a Blackmoore and a Fireball. Alas, I didn't get a chance to try them out (had to leave abruptly) but I will some day soon!

chicago is thousands of miles from BC, as far as I'm aware.

the richie blackmore is more of an 80's rock/metal amp and is very open-sounding, while the powerball is more modern, and has a lot more gain and is more compressed. i probably prefer the blackmore too, but it does depend what you want. i could see some of the modern metallers not thinking the RB has enough gain, though i do know of some modern metallers who like it.

it's all preference, unfortunately, which is why it's best if you can try one yourself...

ive been thinkingg about the screamer combo for a while now to replace my Vox DA15 - how high gain does it go, ideally want to cover anything from satriani, vai to jason becker, dream theater or some metal like nevermore - doable without pedals? Im in UK so ENGLs seem to be good value compared to the likes of mesa boogie
