Ska N00b thread:
Hopefully this will decrease the overflow of “What ska bands should I listen to?” Thanks to neidnarb11890, element4433, and StreetLight3989 putting this all together.
Overview: Ska started in the 50’s combining Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line, accented guitar, or piano rhythms on the offbeat, and in some cases, jazz-like horn riffs. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant musical genre of Jamaica, and it was also popular with British mods. Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican ska scene of the 1960s, the 2 Tone ska revival that started in England in the late 1970s, and the third wave ska movement, which started in the 1980s. Sargasm's Edit: There was a thread asking about the word "Ska" itself, so I figured I'd add a little bit of information about it. The word "Ska" is pronounced to rhyme with "spa." There are two prominent theories on the etymology of the word itself. (Nobody knows for sure which is true.) Some say it comes from the phrase "Love Skavoovie," which was a greeting used in Jamaica at the time, notably by Cluet Johnson who was an early Ska bassist. Another theory is that "ska, ska, ska, ska" was an onomatopoetic way people would describe the syncopated rhythm of the music. First wave/Creation The people of Jamaica began buying radio’s and listening to American jazz, blues, and R&B in the 40’s. They began creating their own forms of these genre’s, playing chopped guitar beat, walking bass line, jazz horns, piano, and drums in 4/4 time. Ska was immediately popular in Jamaica. It was after all Jamiaca's first indiginous original music sound. Bands: Laurel Aitken Prince Buster Desmond Dekker Clement "Coxsone" Dodd Don Drummond The Ethiopians Justin Hinds Judge Dread Byron Lee & the Dragonaires The Melodians Jackie Opel Millie Small Derrick Morgan Eric "Monty" Morris The Paragons Lee "Scratch" Perry The Pioneers Duke Reid Ernest Ranglin Rico Rodriguez The Skatalites Symarip Toots and the Maytals The Wailers Second Waves/Two Tone: In the late 70’s musicans in Britain began mixing Jamaican ska with the the speed and aggression of punk. The lyrics were about racial harmony when racail tensions were high in England. 2 tone didn’t last long though. Ska shows attrached two groups of people; The Skinheads and Rude Boys. Skinheads were/are working class people, while Rude Boys were rich and wore fancy clothes. There were constant fights between these to groups and clubs stopped booking ska bands. Bands: Bad Manners The Beat (also known as The English Beat) The Bodysnatchers Madness The Selecter The Specials (known at some points as The Special AKA) Special Beat 3rd Wave: In the 80’s bands influenced by influenced by 2 tone began to form. Third wave ska music often features brass instruments and a heavily-accented offbeat; a characteristic that was also prevalent in the second wave of ska. Southern California was the central hotspot for third wave ska, although the genre has spread around the globe. Bands began combing the tradition ska sound with pop punk. Several third wave ska bands have played in a traditional 1960s style though. Third wave ska reached the peak of its commercial success between 1995 and 1998. Bands: The Allstonians The Aquabats Area-7 Athena Big D and the Kids Table Blue Meanies The Bruce Lee Band Buck-O-Nine The Busters Capdown Catch 22 The Chinkees Critical Mass Dance Hall Crashers Five Iron Frenzy Goldfinger Hepcat The Insyderz Johnny Socko King Django King Prawn Leningrad Less Than Jake Let's Go Bowling Mad Caddies Mephiskapheles The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Mustard Plug No Doubt The O.C. Supertones The Pietasters The Planet Smashers Reel Big Fish Ruder Than You Save Ferris The Scofflaws Ska-P Skankin' Pickle Slightly Stoopid The Slackers spunge Streetlight Manifesto Suburban Rhythm The Toasters The Uptones Third Wave Sub Genre - Ska Punk/Ska-Core: Ska punk combines punk and ska, ska-core combines ska with hardcore. Ska punk is characterised by faster tempos, guitar distortion, onbeat punk-style interludes (usually the chorus), and nasal, gruff, or shouted vocals. The more ska-influenced style of ska punk features a more developed instrumentation and a cleaner vocal and musical sound. The common instrumentation includes guitar, bass guitar, drums, saxophones, trombones, trumpets and/or other brass instruments, and sometimes an organ. Well unless you want to sort through hundreds of bands and make a seperate ska list, then go ahead. The purpose of this thread is to give a brief introduction as to what ska is for n00bs.

Nice work, guys. *-) I like it, it sums everything up very nicely.
By the way, who would you d00dz say was the first third-wave band? The Dance Hall Crashers released their first record in '89, making them the oldest band I listen to that has that third-wave "silly ska" sound. As far as I know, DHC predates Mustard Plug, Reel Big Fish, Big D, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, etc. So who kicked off the whole thing?
