there's so much more aspects to tone than eq and gain....every amp has it's own way of handeling the EQ, there's different brands, different models, different amount of watts...transistor or tube amps, and of course different guitars, different speakers, different effects..strings...changes in any of these things give incredible tone changes... and when you think you know everthing of your artists gear, his tone was maybe changed again with some studio after eq'ing..compressors..limiters..and then mastered by some other dude..making it impossible for you to re-create

there's only one way to re-create someone's tone and this is by listening carefully to the gear you own and turning knobs,switching guitars,effects(even their order) untill YOU like it! writing that stuff down for yourself is ok, but these settings are useless for people with different gear! their stuff won't sound the same, even totally different, and you're giving them wrong pointers! i see this guy with a 10 watt amp posting his settings, you cant tell me that's giving anyone credible pointers

if you think im just whining, okay fine, in that case consider this an essay about tone aspects

I agree, to some extent. If you're an experienced player who knows how to EQ and find his/her own tone, then yes, this thread is useless.

But imagine yourself as a beginner. You just got your Squier and your Microcube, and you like Black Sabbath. You don't hear much of a difference when you change the knobs on your amp, so you go onto UG (probably via Google), and you see the setting for Tony Iommi. You turn your amp on and turn the knobs to the right numbers, and play the intro riff to Ironman. It sounds perfect, exactly like the CD.
So you play with it like that for a couple of days, and then you start thinking that it doesn't sound quite right. So you turn the knobs again until it sounds better, and then repeat this cycle.

That is a beginner learning how to EQ. I could have said this in far fewer words, but this thread is a starting point for many a beginner's path to their own sound.

Ok I do read posts :P And its quite amazing that you are able to make out the tone settings just by listening to the studio track but kk here is a video:
