Over-rated doesn't mean he wasn't talented. People think he was better than he actually was, yes. But, he was still a good guitarist.

As someone who has given dime a lot of shit in the past( due to my own immaturity), I agree.

I like Cemetery Gates.
He influenced Buckethead. So I guess I like him.

But his tone on Cowboys From Hell was so f*cking awful...

I also think he has one of the most tragic deaths in music. He was the only person to ever be killed while performing at a concert, I think. If anyone else also was, I wasn't aware.

Bucket head is also a good guitarist! I like his songs "Jordan" and "Soothsayer"

He was best friends with Kerry King, and they had a lot in common.

I think Dimebag was a great guitarist. I don't see why people would disagree with that. However, I don't feel making a new thread about Dimebag is appropriate. It truly is pathetic how people have drove this into the dirt. If anything, if you respect him as a guitarist and a person... you should just listen to his music and shut the fvck up.

Also, people only started listening to this music and making a big deal about it after he died and made a whole fashion statement about it. There are plenty of people who listened to Pantera and were huge fans way before his death... and alot of those people just listen to the music and shut the fvck up.. like I said.

Never met Dime, but here's my perspective: he was both real as real can be, but also a fake. OK, he was a freakin' rockstar... he lived larger than life, and burned the candle at both ends. He was, at one point, an amazing guitarist- full of energy, innovative, and just played from the heart, which is pretty much the one quality that defines a great guitarist.

However, he also seemed as if he was very concerned w/ image & how people viewed him... living the rockstar life is all about image. So buying shots for a bunch of leeches, partying w/ everyone all the time and all that... it's not something anyone can keep up forever. Eventually everyone gets sick of the scumbags, being hungover, etc. Obvious to some, he was very tired at the end. Riffs and songwriting had stagnated, the Damageplan record was atrocious... even some diehard Pantera/Dime fans were quite disappointed with that one... I know I was.

So, the TL;DR version is that when Dime was at the top of his game, he was truly badass... but once the party was over & everyone woke up to trashed lives & hotel rooms in the morning it became clear that the rockstar lifestyle was not all it was cracked up to be.

Pantera was taken for granted in life, and over rated in death. Fortunately, theres millions of hours of other music there for us to enjoy, and as big as Pantera once was, they are small in the cosmos of heavy music all around.
