I know right? If they just mixed up the riffs a bit more, I can see myself really enjoying them again. When they DO play other riffs (Singularity itself is a great example) it's totally funky and awesome, but then they just fall back on those scratchy breakdown beats and I just lose interest. It actually annoys me, no matter how rational I'm trying to be

It's like I said before, when TesseracT are good, they're ridiculously good. Acle can freaking write riffs. He just needs to do it more often than twice on an album.

One of the things that genuinely confuses me about TesseracT (or rather, their fans), is the constant use of the word "technical" in regards to them. The guitar riffs are "tastefully technical". I've read at least 3 reviews, and god knows how many people talking about it, and the term "technical" just seems like the last thing I'd apply to them. Slightly mathy? Sure. Maybe a tad proggy (yet closer to alternative)? Defs. But technical?

God, maybe I am getting old...

What does mathy proggy and alternative even mean in this context?

I'm with you on this one. TesseracT's stuff is challenging to play, but it's not the technical stuff that makes it hard. It's all about getting those syncopated rhythms into your head. Once you've learned a few songs, though, it's not hard because they use similar rhythmic ideas in almost every single song.

Personally, I think "tastefully technical" is the last way I'd describe TesseracT.

I know right? Just, feels odd. Like describing any grind band as "beautiful". I get that other people feel different things, but sometimes those feelings just fly straight over my head. I wish I knew how to use Pro Tools and what not. I really want to go through and edit together new versions of all of the new album's tracks. And yes, I know how arrogant that sounds. And yes, I am totally implying I could do it better than them.

I'm using them as deliberately obtuse adjectives, keep up, man. "Mathy" as in "features large numbers of patterns that seem deliberately oddly timed or complicated", "Proggy" as in "has clean parts and heavy parts, AT THE SAME TIME", "alternative" as in "Alt rock whininess, Radiohead, Muse, etc".

Well, last time I remember you being an arrogant prick about songwriting, it was complaining about The Human Abstract. As I remember, I didn't believe you, listened to The Man with No Face, and then changed my mind. So basically, my impression is that you're only an arrogant prick when you can back it up. I'd be interested to see what you'd do with the master tapes from Altered State.

I love you too, man.

NON NEGATIVE COMMENT TIEM

So, which vocalist is your favourite? Mate of mine prefers the first dude, but I think Dan really wins out. Then again, just PICKING Dan seems like too obvious a choice... I think Elliot had a really interesting tone as well, I was disappointed he didn't get a chance to really "show off" anything with them.

First guy had the most powerful voice. He was freakin awesome.

Dan was excellent, no doubt, but kinda lacked the richness in his voice.

Elliott was my least favorite, he sounded terrible in TesseracT. I like his other stuff, but I completely hated him singing Dan's stuff.

Ashe is an excellent singer, and he doesn't sound half bad doing Dan's stuff, but he made the huge mistake of doing notes on the record he can't hit live.

Nobody's perfect, of course not, but seeing him struggle to hit the high notes in Nocturne, then giving up and pointing the mic to the crowd like he expected the crowd to hit them is really bad.

I don't mind when singers have the self-awareness to realise they're not gonna hit a note during a full concert of singing, and just leave out the passage (even the great Devy does that every now and then, or simply switches into screaming to cover it up), but to struggle with the note in every single live video, in the chorus of a song, and then giving up, bothers me a lot. There's just better ways to deal with it, ESPECIALLY since TesseracT have a big-ass backing track running the whole time anyways.

Anyways that the one thing that bothers me about Ashe. Both the first guy, Dan and Ashe are great, but I think the first guy simply would've made TesseracT float more towards the heavy and darker side of things, which I would have preferred.

Skyhabor are basically what I wish TesseracT sounded like, to be honest. Ok, I don't expect TesseracT to have THAT many non-breakdown riffs, but still. The fact that Skyhabor have djenty stuff mixed in with atmospheric stuff mixed in with ACTUAL RIFFS just makes me pretty erect.

Have you fans of Skyharbor and TesseracT ever checked out the band Aviations? I bet it'd be up your alley. Try the song Raised Expectations

My band is opening or Tesseract in October. Thought I should share since they are one of my favorite bands.
