Drop C will work.

Try these settings: Midz dimed, treb around 2 o'clock, bass at noon or lower. Gain boost off, gain at around 3 o'clock.

Kinda like a hard rock tone, but a bit deeper.

If you can, set it to get some epic power tube overdrive.

It's late so I don't expect teh clipz till tomorrow

Is some agalloch/ my dying bride/ november's doom suitable for your doomy sound that your looking for? I could record a my dying bride song next time I go home if you'd like. It wouldn't be till next week but I'm fairly sure I can get the tone at least somewhat accurately using both my pedal rig and the amp. Not sure about just the amp though.

My spider III just isn't doing it for me.

I've been looking into the peavey valveking 112 and 212. the 212 is a bit of a stretch for my budget but if it is worth it i'll get it.

I play mostly metal/shred (well i WANT to shred eventually) and classic rock, along with the occasional clean. I want an amp that is loud enough to practice with my band/play small gigs AND sound good in my room. I played it in the shop at low-ish volume (like the max i would have it at during the day in my house) and i couldn't get anything past an acdc tone really, so i'll probably buy a dist./OD pedal too if i get it.

So should i buy it and if so what pedal with it?

Personally, I would just get the 112. It's lighter and would be only 1 speaker swap if you decided to do that later. Plus 50 watts is more than enough to jam and gig with and will be much easier to deal with for bedroom practice as opposed to 100 watts.

Hopefully all of these clips posted here recently will give you a sense of what it is capable of doing. It certainly can do Rock and Cleans- and some of us are interested in how far this amp can be pushed on the heavier stuff.

If the 212 is a budget push then I would recommend the Digitech Bad Monkey OverDrive pedal. $50. An EQ pedal would be good too but get the OD first. It is like night and day. Good luck.

I'm really happy with the metal tones I'm getting out of my 112 with the Bad Monkey. It's got plenty of gain for me. You just gotta fiddle around with it to get it just right for you.

Ha, good stuff.

I'm thinking either Valveking or Windsor for my next amp (because they're cheap).

I can find a VK for cheaper than a Windsor, but I want to hear if the VK can do what I want it to.

I have the VK-112 combo. Its alright with boost and OD pedals but the lead tone isn't smooth enough for my tastes.

you all talk about a tube change?
which tubes would you recomend?
i would like just an all around better sound, i play a little bit of everything but if you have to know distortion would more appreciated.

Do you prefer a Darker or Brighter sound?

I tweaked my OD, to get a smooth scream. If your OD is a TS like circuit (like the SD-1), you can play with the clipping diodes. Use LEDs instead the diodes, or LEDs mixed with diodes, and find your sound .

Ok, I'm going to make a new thread and see how she does. It'll have the informative first post and stuff in it, and I'll provide a link to this thread for continuation. Sound Good? Then, if/when the thread catches on, I'll PM a mod to close this one.
