The NEW Smiths Thread
The last one was starting to get a little tiresome, so here's a new one, devoted exclusively to the Mancunians and their impressive body of work.
Starter Guide The Smiths were a singles band, so I'd suggest starting out with Singles. Then get The Queen is Dead to hear the Smiths at their peak as an album band. From there, it's basically whatever, though I strongly suggest Meat is Murder. Videos - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out - This Charming Man |

First!
Ah, I've always wanted to do that. Anyway, nice opening post. Personally I'd recommend Strangeways after The Queens Is Dead, and then their debut. In fact, I think I'd go for The Queen Is Dead before any singles compilation, too. But that's pretty much how I got into them, so I might be biased, I guess. What's everyone's current favourite album, then? |

They're one of my favourite bands and I now own all of their discograpy. I'd personally recommend 'Louder Than Bombs' for a first album.
My favourite album is The Queen Is Dead, followed by their debut and then Strangeways, Here We Come. I honestly don't get all the fuss about Meat Is Murder. My favourite songs at the minute 'Please Please Please...', 'Asleep' and 'Reel Around the Fountain'. EDIT: Also, I read somewhere that there was some scandle in the British tabloids involving the Smiths, so Joe Dallesandro wouldn't let them use the still for their debut. Morrisey posed and some records were released with his photo, then Dallesandro let them use the image. So the LP sleeves with Morrisey must be worth quite a bit. That's how I think the story goes anyway. PS: Most of you guys probably know this, but that's the same guy's crotch on the cover of Sticky Fingers by The Rolling Stones. Johnny Marr's various weird noises in How Soon Is Now? came pretty high in Guitarist's list of the Top 50 Guitar Tones ever, which was nice.
The Smiths are one of my favourite bands ever, and Johnny Marr is one of my favourite guitarists ever, which is why he's graced my avatar since I joined this site.

Psh, I regularly wear that album cover emblazened on my chest; it's one of my oldest and trustiest t-shirts. I've really been digging Moz's solo stuff as of late. |
