hey, I've noticed a few people on this forum just have a flat neck before carving with no heels and volutes cut out. when the back of your necks are flat from heel to headstock do you just rasp it down until its shaped properly? I do it a different way, which is why Im confused about the way a lot of you guys do it.

This is my first build so I have never done it before, but yeah I was going to shape it between the neck and volute after I have fretted it, with rasps and hand sanders ![]()

Having no inlays wont be a big deal as long as the side dots are still there, at least that's my experience.
Doesn't mean you're still not a guitar n00b, heh ![]() I should probably stop spamming this up with mindless conversation. Any estimate on when you should have this finished? |

I wouldnt go that far but I really appreciate it ![]() Quote:
Construction should be finished in the next couple of weeks (depending on how long carving and fretting takes) but painting will probably be longer (gotta acquire all the materials and learn to swirl first) I will be making an update tommorow showing the inlay process, it turned out pretty well, I might even be able to get the bridge drilled and recessed if I'm lucky.

^awesome!
You should be able to knock the neck carve out in around an hour or two because its your first time. Its not a hard process. |

^ i gotta agree, my first neck went from a piece of wood with a scarf joint to a truss routed, tapered, headstock shaped and carved neck in about 4 hours, its not completely done, just needs finishing up to the right feel when i get the fretboard, but yeah shaping is relativly easy

So yeah update
![]() The inlaying is nearly done, I am waiting for some black superglue from a guitar building site based in the UK so I can get it all glued in, when it is I will radius and fret it, and then carve the neck. As far as the body goes the bridge is drilled, I need to wait for the fretting to be complete to see if the bridge needs recessing (the action doesnt look to bad atm, but It will probably need a lil recess) and when I know where the bridge will finally sit I can drill the ferrule holes (I cant drill them now because if I drill them too close the the bridge the strings might hang up on the side of the TOM which I dont want) ![]() Bridge Installed ![]() Cover Installed (with magnets fo shiz) ![]() HS looking metal as phuck ![]() ![]() Back of the headstock Heres some inlay stuff, if you are in the UK get your inlay stuff from www.smallwonder-music.co.uk the postage is a bit of a rip but the packaging is immence, check it out. ![]() You get your own lil carrying case, for inlay shell? wtf lol ![]() woah what is that ![]() Blood Red Basin, re constituted rock in epoxy, I thought it would go well with the colour scheme I had to cut dots out of that and shape them, which is hard lol

and for an additional touch, I though NEIL at the 12th fret might be kinda cool
![]() Heres how I did that... ![]() peice of metal sheet, scored on it is the 12th fret size and the letters within that fret ![]() Cut out the letters ![]() stick the template to the wood and dremel out the middle (you can also see the dot markings) ![]() The inlay family, as you can see the dots taper down in size. ![]() The Neil, I might redo the I its not tight enough. ![]() The neck looks pretty swish for a first time inlay, at least personally I think its cool ![]() I was pretty pissed that even though I market it all out etc, the last couple of dots are not perfectly inline, but what can you do. I cant work on this for a while now, because I cant finish the neck with out the superglue hopefully my mum will find me some borax (shes a pharmacist) so I can start getting the finish perfected.

Wow great choice for inlay material. Cool idea for the 12th fret as well. What size magnets did you use, and where did you get them (for the cavity cover)? I was going to do that at first, but I didn't know what kind of magnets to use or where to get them.
Everything is looking awesome dude. FINISH NAU PLEESSE |

Unfortunately I can’t finish it for much longer than anticipated
![]() I might just bite the bullet with the ferrules and just hope they don’t hang up on the bridge. The magnets are just 10mm diameter magnets, one glued into a hole into the body, and another (matching the polarity, or the cover would just float above lol) fits in the same recess and is glued to the cavity cover, they were just on a notice board we have in our house, I hope no one misses them ![]()

Update
only 8 holes left to drill (pup rings) and only the neck left to do. My mum bought me some borax, so I can start experimenting with swirling! ![]() ![]() Top ferrules and bridge drilled, arm rest carved. ![]() Back ferrules drilled, tummy cut and AANJ carved. ![]() Another look at the carving (technically its just sanding) ![]() Mock up UG foot shot FTW
