The Spear of the Lily is Aureoled is probably the most accesible.

I started with The Spear Of The Lily Is Aureoled.
It's a great album, and the first of three so you can work your way through the other two later.

I advise any fans of Sculptured to check out Subterranean Masquerade as well.
I made a thread on them http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/foru...ad.php?t=898305

I still haven't gotten Embodiment, although it's on my list. I like what I've heard on their Myspace.
How's the second album? |

I haven't been able to get my hands on it, but the last 3 songs on the myspace are from it so that shoudl give you a good overview.

don't they write songs based off of matrices? rather than actual pre set chord progressions?

No idea.
My theory knowledge isn't great. I don't know the names for almost everything I play...

a computer program that doesn't exist?
just kidding! I think that they use a special 12 tone scale of sorts for writing. Those chords they use sound brilliant though. I kept hearing about some type of music that wasn't based on diatonic scales, but rather some foreign concept that never caught on....though my memory doesn't serve me well.

Foreign concept? Like the sounds in between notes that we don't really use in western music? Quarter bends, etc...

no, matrices are just individual aspects of a musical piece (the time signiture, key, rhythm, ect.)

I wasn't talking about matrices.
I was responding to the mention of foreign concepts.

The put equal importance on each note so there's no set key.
At least I read that somewhere... I don't know much about theory...

its good, not as experimental as Embodiement, but good nonetheless you should be able to get a good feel for it, as half of the songs from it are on the myspace |

Ah I thought so... It's not on Amazon or The End, but I refuse to download it as these guys deserve my money. I don't know how I'll get ahold of it now, but I'll get it eventually.
