7-String MusicMan JP build (with LOTS OF PICS)

Hi UGers.

My school requires us to complete a graduation project in order to receive our diploma. I, like a lot of other UGers I've noticed, am building a guitar. It was originally going to start out as a 7-string PRS, but working with another guy in making the template, we soon discovered that trying to make a bolt on PRS SC wasn't going to allow for good fret access at all. Now the project has changed quite a bit. Here are the specs:

-Body shape like an Ernie Ball MM JP-7
-24 fret bolt-on maple neck w/ satin finish
-25'' scale
-Stainless steel jumbo frets
-Graphite nut
-Ebony fretboard
-Mahogany body
-Gotoh SG-38 tuners
-Flamed maple top
-Blaze 7 Neck in the neck
-D-Sonic 7 in the bridge
-2 volume controls, 1 master tone
-Push/Pull on the tone knob (for a coil split to activate the middle 2 coils when in the middle position)
-Recessed TonePros® Tune-O-Matic Bridge
-String thru body
-Natural finish

We bought the neck because this my first build and I don't want to screw up the most important part of having a playable guitar.
That about covers it...I'll put up anything that I forgot later.

My mom's friend knows some guys who are going to supply us with a free piece of mahogany as well as access to their shop. They've built guitars before, and are going to be helping us out quite a bit, since this is my first guitar build. Hopefully it'll be a good experience, because building guitars is something I've been interested in for a while, and want to continue doing it.

We've already ordered the neck, and it arrived a few weeks ago. Once I get the template, we're going to get the wood and begin building. BIG thanks to Jamie Unden who has been designing the template for me. Check out his site

On to pics...since I've only got the neck so far, that's all I've got pictures of (makes sense, right?)
Here it is:

Showing the headstock and the lack of nut so far.

Close-up of the stainless steel frets and the fretboard.

Tell me what you guys think!
-Joe

uber respect, this would probably be my fave build around. =O

love the jp's and all musicman guitars. it would be super super amazing if you could use a gunstock and wax finish on the neck like musicman does as standard, but it might be abit hard...

looks like its going to be great, keep it up!

sounds cool.

Has anyone else noticed there's been lots of 7-string build threads lately?

Yeah I did..I thought it was going to be a cool idea when the idea first came up, but then everybody started doing it

I only did the fancy font and color for an interesting first post..I'll probably do the same when there are updates with new pictures as well. Thanks for the support everybody.

I'm starting a 7 this summer too. But I've been planning it since last year...

Sounds nice, I always liked the look of those guitars. And oil and wax finish is alot easier then doing nitro, but it would have to be natural.

Make sure you make it to 00:32 of that video. You won't be able to stop watching after that, believe me!

whatever you decide for the body top wood, i hope you put a veneer on the headstock and match the finish. and for what its worth, i vote for the purple burst over the trans red. i love red guitars, but that purple just looks too damn good.

Yeah, I'll probably try to do a veneer.

EDIT: On second thought, I'll definitely do one.

Amen to that. Musicman designs are awesome, and so is the JP model. I personnaly like the Steve Morse one. Strat-ish but still very Musicman in its own right. Love the blue one.

Good luck with this thing, Joe. I'm trying to do a lap steel for my project. I have a feeling that yours will turn out much nicer, though. What was your research question? I'm having trouble getting mine.

I never really got the seemingly misplaced middle pup, but he seems to go alright with it

Yeah, that extra pickup is probably useless for about 99% of the guitar players out there, but as you say, if Steve wants it, I don't think anyone would have the nerve to tell him no : http://www.music-man.com/stevemorse.html

I just love the shape and that pickguard. It just works visually IMO.

Haha, thanks. My research question was something along the lines of "How do different materials affect certain aspects of a guitar's tone?"
Why do you think mine will turn out nicer? At least yours will be a tad more original...I haven't seen any lap steel builds on here yet. Good luck as well.

EDIT: concerning the Steve Morse middle pickup...I watched the videos on www.ernieball.com and it seemed like he didn't even know why he had it.
