Stoner is more like Blues for the Red Sun and Holy Mountain. Sludge is more like Dopesmoker and the heavier slower stuff that followed it.

Ah, okay. Thanks. I don't think i have any stoner bands then. I'll try and get a few and compare them.

Not really. That's more like stoner doom (Electric Wizard, Gates of Slumber, Sleep, etc.).

Sludge involves a harsher approach towards the riffs and as Kepuix said, is influence from edgier music.
Famous sludge bands are Eyehategod, early Mastodon (prog sludge), Down (leans much more to the stoner side of the equation), and many other bands from the NOLA scene.

i take it that Sleep would be a good stoner band to start with?

They would. Start with Holy Mountain.

Also try Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley.

I recommend starting with the big three stoner albums - Kyuss' Blues for the Red Sun, Sleep's Holy Mountain and Monster Magnet's Spine of God

^Not identical, but the blues influences are usually there.

And I love Electric Wizard obviously, but I like Acid King more than Acid Bath.

No. Granted, Holy Mountain is good, but Dopesmoker is just so immensely crushing.

Bongzilla's Amerijuanican is also a great stoner album. Stonesphere = best driving song ever.

MAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRIIIIII-JUANA!

I heard some songs from Amerijuanican. Crushing stuff, and surprisingly interesting drumming.

I WANNA GET HIIIGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Shred Head: Unfortunately, EW's heavy as fvkk atmosphere isn't easily found, let alone such a doom-foretelling one.
Goatsnake have a very heavy atmosphere as well, but aren't nearly as nihilistic sounding.

There are some great bands in this genre. Nobody's mentioned Church of Misery yet, so I'll put in a plug for them. Their earlier stuff, particularly the splits with Iron Monkey and sHeavy, are some of the best psychedelic heavy music out there. Once they lost that vocalist their quality waned a bit.

Also, if you like stoner metal and don't own IB's "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida," stop posing and get it. Period.

I wasn't as crazy about Death is the Communion. Not as much of the hazy stoner metal atmosphere as I would've liked.

As far as HoF is concerned, Art of Self Defense if the best album that no one's ever heard.

Not a single Cathedral shoutout? For shame.

Man there are so many good bands in this genre its ridiculous. I think doom/stoner is the only genre of metal that never wore itself out. Its fans are still totally content with the same grooving riffs and sad melodies.

Huge difference. Instead of describing what the genre sounds like, I'll just post clear cut examples of bands that will show you.

Sludge bands include: Eyehategod (probably the biggest band besides Crowbar and Soilent Green although aren't pure sludge), Grief, and Corrupted.

Stoner metal is less clear cut because stoner metal is basically stoner rock too heavy to be called rock and roll. Bands like Sleep, and Cathedral after The Ethereal Mirror are good examples.

Honestly I prefer to just call it all DOOM, it simpler, and even it it all isn't really doom (bands like Queens of the Stone Age and Fu Manchu), I put it in the pantheon of doom bands because it all gives me the same sort of feeling.

^Doom =/= Stoner, if you think so, you have not listened to enough of doom metal

I think DITC > AOSD

AOSD is a great album too, but something about DITC makes it one of Matt Pike's best albums

Anyone here heard of Mustasch? Most people that are into stoner music dig this band. I think they are great:

A couple of mates of mine. They broke up a while ago, and maybe I'm biased, but I think they were a great band, and it's a real shame they broke up.

This is my favorite genre, I love it all from stoner rock, to metal, to sludge, doom and drone. The perfect music for me.
