Good, cheap attenuators

Are there any good, cheap attenuators out there? I'm looking to buy one with the sole purpose of playing my amp at high power at low volume. Things like the THD Hot Plate are pretty expensive, and I was wondering if there was anything cheaper.
Thanks

^Yeah, I'm looking for stuff like that. I found one on the US craigslist (UK has $20 shipping) for like $10... do those kinds of things do what they're supposed to? If so, I'll try to get one of them.

That's not an attenuator. That's basically a second master volume - it goes between the preamp and the poweramp. An attenuator goes after the power amp.

What kind of effect would it have then?

EDIT: It seems like I can buy the Weber Mass 100w Power Attenuator at a good price, used. I think I'll go with that.

It would be a master volume.

BTW, running your amp really hard then bringing it down to bedroom volumes is going to suck a significant amount of tone. I only use my attenuator to bring my amp down a couple of decibels.

Really? Okay..

That does mean it doesn't sound that good...And you're just "shortening" your tubes' lifespan..

What I mean I do, is I use the attenuator, let's say, during a full band practice, and use it to get power tube distortion at slightly lower volume, but it would still be loud enough to play a gig.

I didn't plan on running my amp crazy high, but I'm planning on buying a Legacy, and from reviews I've read, I've heard it doesn't get a great sound until you turn it up a little ways. It's basically so I can get a good sound and not have to worry about killing my ears. I'm also in a band, so the amp isn't just for bedroom purposes.

Hm..Well, I've tried out a Legacy, and I ran it at about shouting levels of conversation, maybe a little lower. Sounded good to me.

Good to know it sounds good haha

Still, I think it'll be a good idea to have an attenuator for the amp.

Maybe. I'd buy the amp first, and then see what you think.

i got my THD hotplate for 210 off ebay. the thing is practically brand new. just match up your ohms and your set. as for losing tone and stuff. i only notice that when i crank it to -16DB, which is the last one. the THD hotplate is one of the best out there. you can't go wrong. as for the weber. i heard good thing about it but the thing looks 2 ugly lol, plz don't flame me for that :P

^Why flame you? We get something that's much cheaper brand new, that no one is really even going to be looking at when we play. Don't think we're losing out.

I don't care if it's ugly, haha. Yeah, I was going to get the amp first, but I found onef or $50 on ebay, and it ends in 4 days. I probably wont end up getting it, but theres a chance that I might decide the deal is too good to pass up.
