You probably need to improve your posture. Or perhaps you have too heavy a guitar, what guitar do you have, and does it have a Floyd Rose-like tremolo?

Not play the guitar?
Get a new back? Explain a bit more fully how you are playing, your posture, what the guitar is and how the pain manifests?

What the hell does Semi-Electric mean? You mean Semi-hollow?
You probably have bad posture. I have the same problem.

The weight of your guitar has nothing to do with your back hurting if you're sitting down. I'm willing to bet your posture could be improved. Most guitarists fall into the same category.

I second your posture being the problem. I have a lot of back problems as well. Sitting with a straight back always helps, but is hard to do constantly.

My advise would be to see a good chiropractor. You may think this expensive but you only have one back and if you damage it then its for life. Another tip in addition to better posture is to vary your playing position as much as possibe. Get used to playing standing up for 50% of your playing time. Varying position will generally help with this sort of problem. Seek professional advice though. You may have an underlying problem or past injury.

make sure your back is straight when you play. Also, try a classicalish position (resting it on your left leg instead of the right. )

Yea no kidding. He says hes playing sitting down people ask what kind of guitar hes using and if it has a trem as if that means anything. I would be willing to bet your hunching over to look at your fretboard. Try to sit straight up or play standing you can't sit their hunched over the whole time. My back hurts too when im trying to learn something new that makes me need to constantly have my eyes aimed at my fretboard. I try not to hunch over as much as possible but its easy to do. I also agree with the above poster who said to use the classical (left leg) technique. It is also an advantage because it puts your neck out farther so when your standing your closer to your sitting position. When i sit up straight in this position the guitar is only slightly higher but otherwise identical to my standing position. Last edited by /-\liceNChains : 07-14-2008 at 12:31 PM. |
