Don't you think its cool that musicians get their daily dose of useless news in the forum? I'm always last to find out whatever's going on in my country/rest of the world as I don't watch tv or listen to the radio. Sound like a complete douche when I say "Huh? When did that happen? You making this shit up"
"No, really. About three months ago!!!"
"Riiiight... I'll just erm... stand over there for a moment while I get rid of this shame"

Now I get it right in the forum!! Whoop!!

Neither did I. And it really didn't bother me. Until the newspaper hired a gorgeous door to door sales agent. Now the folded faces turn up on my doorstep every day. And they always have so many meaningless things to say.
Just say no to the good looking girl dammit, just say no.

(Actually it's quite handy for my work to know what's going on in the world so I can discuss current events with people - at least that's how I justified it to myself.)

omg why does his top looks like a bedazzled table veneer? did he pay extra for that?

also, that band i was totally trashing on with the bach cover is looking for a vocalist and i might lower my dignity and audition because, i mean, they're still better than any other metal band here

idk tho, i mean there's tough competition

like why even try after that

I've heard the symmetrical minor second augmented second scale called the Bartok scale. It's not totally ludicrous to have a shorthand for note choice.

And how is it different from playing the Melodic Minor scale starting on the 4th scale degree?

If you're referring to the "Bartok" scale I know of, it's

1 b2 3 4 #5 6

and the 4th mode of the melodic minor is

1 2 3 4 5 b6 b7

So they're very different. Is the one in the video equivalent to the 4th mode of the melodic minor?

Personally I hate thinking of modes in parallel, I'd prefer "Bartok scale" to "4th Mode of Melodic Minor".

Actually I was thinking of this one.

I suppose I can't see the point of inventing a new name for something that can be obtained by rotating through an existing scale. But then that's just me.

Oh, yeah, I recall that from when I studied the Concerto for Orchestra but I can't remember where, do you know off the top of your head?

As to your second point, do you call the minor scale "6th mode of the major scale"? Or do you use the more common shorthand? (sorry for reductio ad absurdum if you feel it is <3 )

On the first point - actually I just wiki'd Bartok Scale, got redirected to that article, noticed the scale was already a subset of the ascending melodic minor, and realised I'd probably refer to it by reference to that.

On the second point I see where you're coming from

As it happens I call them all "the [qualifier] minor scale" (where [qualifier] = [natural | harmonic | melodic]) even though the natural minor scale contains the same notes as the Aeolian mode. The harmonic and ascending melodic scales (and their modes) are different from each other so I can see the point of giving them different names. The natural minor didn't really get emphasized back in the 1800s when I was taught theory - back then it was taught as the 'descending melodic minor scale' and didn't really have a separate life apart from the ascending melodic minor.

The reason for not wanting to proliferate names has to do with the fact that I tend to view scales (and their various permutations) in a slightly mathematical sense. So, for example, with the major scale the initial interval pattern of TTSTTTS can be rotated to produce STTSTTT, TSTTSTT, and so on. Seeing as the initial pattern kind-of 'contains' the other patterns I tend to think "why name each permutation when you can just name the set?". This has quite a lot to do with (a) me being a bit anal, (b) reading quite a lot of stuff about permutations in music (Allen Forte's book "The Structure of Atonal Music" - I recommend it for anyone having trouble sleeping).

So I guess - following that to its logical conclusion - I would have to say that the harmonic and ascending melodic minors form two distinct sets, and the natural minor belongs in the major set.

Not that any of that makes any difference at all when I write in a minor key.
