Meeting Steve Reich tomorrow. No big deal or anything... but it's kind of a big deal.

This should probably go in the singing forum but do any of you guys have any tips on singing harmony? For some reason no matter how hard I try to internalise the harmony part I always get drawn towards the lead, and when I do get it right it never sounds quite right in my head which puts me off.

think of it like playing bass in a congested ensemble, or for a solo artist. just show as much restraint as you possibly can - even resorting to dumbing down the part for practice purposes if possible - then work towards it as you get more comfortable. remember that the audience will barely think about your part (even if it's quite important realistically), and you need to execute it properly and minimally to make sure you keep it that way.

That sounds like good advice. I guess the main remedy to my issue is practice. It seems like nothing I've practiced so far has helped in any concrete sense. I can do basic third harmonies against a scale played on the piano but then when it comes time to do third harmonies in actual music my brain shuts off for some reason and won't hear anything but the lead.

During practice sessions form your right hand into a shallow cup.
Place your fingers on the edge of your ear.
When you get the shape of the cup and the position of your hand right you should be able to hear your voice quite clearly.

Practice like that until you've got the tune right a few times, then remove your hand and give it another go. Keep switching between them until you can sing your line consistently.

If you're just having difficulty memorising your melody you'll need a version of the song without the main line on it so you can listen to it without the distraction of the lead. (Or just play it on the piano / guitar / mouse-organ / whatever). Make sure that when you sing the song to yourself you always sing the harmony. If you find yourself singing the lead then punch yourself in the balls and try again.

(Not srs about punching yourself in the balls, btw).

It's really my cup of tea, but still well-played and nicely produced.

I didn't really say much, just introduced myself. I'm not really that much of a fan to be honest, so I didn't have anything to say. He's in town for the new music festival as a guest composer and he came to my school to do a performance and Q&A on WTC 9/11. He was supposed to do a masterclass and hear student compositions, but he subsequently refused to do it. He's kind of a prick to be honest. You can tell he's from New York, that's for sure.

Did you applaud him at any point, and if you did did you phase it?

Srsly, I'd heard he has issues with being an asshole so that doesn't really surprise me. Despite earlier posts I would say I'm a medium fan of his music. I wouldn't want to listen to hours and hours of it, but I could take a normal CD length performance without getting too bored.

Also: What does a guest composer do, exactly? Does he write pieces for the festival, or do stuff on demand, or just swan around being all New Yorkish?

After clapping music there was a significant portion of the audience clapping in rhythm

But mostly he just swans around, probably getting paid an exorbitant fee just to be present. The festival was focused on his music, so 4 out of 6 nights had feature pieces by him and one of the nights was entirely Reich. He didn't compose anything for the festival especially (the composer in residence of the Symphony does that every year) he just showed up and ran the electronics (poorly) for his pieces and did a couple of Q&A sessions.

I'm doing an analysis of Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms (second movement) right now. I'll post it up in a couple weeks Xiaoxi style, so get excited bitches.
