Mana Mana

Finnish band that wrote diabolic rock songs of melancholy narrated by a disembodied spirit.

One of those projects that when circulated around the internet, gets the honor of being argued over "It's Deathrock," "It's grunge rock," "It's post-punk," "it's stoner rock."

It's Rock. It rocks. Another example of the whole release one awesome album then exit stage left.

Wonderfully intoxicating without any sacrifice of Riff or Rock! Admittedly the only physical stuff I've ever had was from trading and I the LP is something I wouldn't mind owning.

Re-listening to this stuff for the first time in who knows how long and we can rest assured, it stays crunchy even in the milk of passing time.

"of melancholy narrated by a disembodied spirit."

ANUS approved. Music is good though.

EDIT: They remind me of Root, or rather Root took notes from Mana Mana.

I can see why you would draw the comparison to Root from the vocal approach over Rock sounds, but I think Mana Mana is a little more unique when compared to Root's familiar sound.

Root tried to fit into a specific genre very early on and it took them more time to get to The Temple in the Underworld which sounds closet to Mana Mana, so I'd agree in saying that Root took longer to find the sound they both have common ground in, but I would say Mana Mana do the sound better.

I should revisit Temple of the Underworld. Root never struck me like it seemed to do for others.

You could. Hell Symphony I find to be way better, but The Temple in the Underground is real oddity for me and I often have a hard time describing it (which is true for most things in all honesty). For me it's up there with Mystifier's The World is So Good..etc on strange, but interesting metal. It can be quite a gut-wrenching experience, one of those albums I hear the riffs and the vocals in my head from day to day and feel the urge to listen.

I feel very uncomfortable trying to fit Mana Mana into any kind of metal music canon. While the vast majority of bands look back and find their inspiration in their musical idols, Mana Mana's music stems from the mental illness of Jouni Mömmö, the outlet of which just happened to be this sort of heavy rock music. It's more than fitting that the band ended so soon with Jouni Mömmö's overdose.

"Evil" is not something I would use to describe the music at all, as the source of the sound is not some juvenile will to rebel against authority, but genuine angst and frustration born of the inability to fight one's own inner demons. The lyrics reflect this very much.

This is why I personally would never mention Mana Mana with the likes of Root and Mystifier. Jouni Mömmö lived in the personal hell that those bands only speak of in their lyrics.

This sounds like it would be right up my alley. I will listen to this tonight. This stuff is fvcking amazing. Why am I just learning of this now?!?! Fantastic stuff. Those riffs just rock. Nothing else to say about them.

Maybe evil wasn't the best dichotomy. Dark rock is certainly descriptive of the sound. Semantics in any case, good tunes await the listener.

Reminds me a bit of Lavra. At any rate, really well done stuff. Pure depressive apathy and gloom, with a handful of ironic major notes thrown in, - on the first listen anyway.

Listened to Bluenothing on a gloomy walk this morning.

Perhaps some Mana Mana will make for a good follow up... Time to spend some money.

Despite having prior knowledge of these Fins I never added them proper to my collection. I finally grabbed myself a copy. Thankfully, not like the last Wildchild rec I needed to have but eluded my grasp.

Fukking Semilanceata tapes. How badly I want you...

Man this is amazing. The atmosphere is so heavy and the riffs are so good and dark. I especially like the guitarwork on Kuolla Elävänä. Does anyone happen to know where I could listen to Totuus Palaa? I imagine buying it would cost me my eyes and then some.
