indeed you are, since their name is X Japan. and they are ****ing sweet. Kurenai, Endless Rain, Rusty Nail, and Silent Jealousy are ****ing great songs. Cellador did an instrumental cover of Silent Jealousy. It was okay, but nowhere near as awesome as the orginal. |

Sex Machineguns + Galneryus. I just generally considered them power/speed metal. Didn't know "J-metal" was really a genre...

yeah, its not a real genre, but it is true that many Japanese bands have quite an original take on metal, so as a whole "J-metal" is really interesting

J-metal is used just like Viking metal, Speed metal or Pagan metal as a blanket-term to group certain types of bands by non-musical characteristics; in this case by their country. I don't like the term because, unlike other terms like Gothenburg Death Metal or Bay Area Thrash where the bands share a common sound, Japan has so many varied styles or genres crammed into J-metal that it loses its meaning as a descriptive term.

Exactly, though I disagree on speed metal. I consider (MY OPINION) speed metal to be the same thing as shred / neo-classical. Most bands don't use it like that, most are closest to traditional / thrash.

^Your definition works well for shred. I mean, playing fast = shred, therefore shred = speed, so Speed metal would fit well.
How do you figure neo-classical, though? It doesn't always have to be fast.

Yes, but it often overlaps with shred.

I personally find many Japanese bands to have a certain quality about the guitar riff and melodies that just screams Japanese to me.... but that's just me.

Well, most regions have a unique sound, but a death metal band from Florida and a death metal band from Liverpool are still death metal bands. Regions can have a specific genre that is more prominent though, i.e. NYDM (brutal death metal.)

I'm not saying they're a different subgenre of music, there's just a certain quality to the sound that I immediately relate to Japan. They can be black metal, thrash, power metal, whatever.

[QUOTE=zerocrack]I looked around and haven't find any J-metal thread so i figure i make one.
J-Metal imp the best kind metal of all since it not just mindless scream or shred but it is very melodic. Here some well know metal band and guitarist incase someone never even heard of J-Metal Guess you've never heard of Melodic death metal. |
