The best single source for music biz info I have ever come across....
http://www.amazon.com/Breaking-Into...d/dp/0671729071 I've read it cover to cover... at least twice. It's not so much about marketing specifically, but about running your band as a succcessful business, and how to gain access to the channels that are out there. HIGHLY recommended. Recording: www.recordingproject.com - a smaller community with some very knowledgeable people about recording. Very nice folks there. Because it is smaller, you don't have as many idiots running around starting flame wars. Pipelineaudio has worked with Sheryl Crow, Megadeth, Gin Blossoms, etc. www.homerecording.com/bbs - Similar to above, but much bigger. More people available to help, but also more prodding, flaming, random nonesense, etc. Still very good though. And if you're into lurking and reading complicated stuff by pros... http://www.prosoundweb.com/ - Steve Albini (producer of Nevermind) hangs out there, as do many other industry pros. Lots of great reading, but being pros, they aren't always as tolerant of people who want to engage in discussion who don't know what they're talking about. http://www.recordingmag.com/index.html - A very good magazine written in a way that the newb recording enthusiast and the intermediate recording types can both gain a lot from it. Reviews from Samson and Behringer to SSL and Neumann; articles on recording, mixing, mic placement, guitar tone, etc. I'm sure I have a couple more on line sources.... lemme see what I can find. CT

http://www.cmrra.ca/Mechanical_Lice..._licensing.html - Their brochure download on that page is a good run-down of how it all works.
http://www.socan.ca/jsp/en/about/faq/licensors.jsp - Music licencing. http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-42/index.html - Canada's Copyright Act http://www.music.gc.ca/index_e.asp - just found this now, but it looks good. http://www.saskrecording.ca/FAQ/index.html - I'm not from Saskatchewan either, but some good info there. Another great resource:
http://www.taxi.com/resources.html Now, if you get Recording Magazine (linked above) they have a regular feature, called the A+R insider, where they feature a Taxi interview with a real-life A+R person and ask them questions about how they look at the industry, what they want from artists, how to get labels and A+R reps to notice you, etc. That single article alone is often worth the price of your subscription. Some of these are real big-shot A+R types too, like John Kolodner, who was Aerosmith's A+R rep. CT

Hell guys, thats a lot of stuff to read from...
Maybe someone could like summarise the links and kind of rate them as to how informative/helpful they're and not. Maybe the guys who've read the content of the links can do it... OH and here's a link that may or may not help: http://creativecommons.org/about/ http://creativecommons.org/license/ They're a non-profit organisation that distributes different type of copyright licenses for you music. So you can get copyright licenses for your stuff from these guys. They're the ones NIN got their copyright license for their latest album "The Slip" from. Important to realize that CC allows others to redistribute your work without your permission...

Great list I see a few things I should take a closer look at here.
Though I wanted to stop by and thank you for adding my street team post to this list. Granted it isn't complete and I would love any additions that the musicians here think should be added. I also want to say that in todays world it is more how you customize the options thrown your way then it is trying to do everything suggested. For instance my list of street team members, maybe only 2 or 3 of those things works for you. Or with the example of squidoo maybe something doesn't sound right at this time due to lack of enough information, leave it for now and move on to what will work for you. I'll stop by from time to time to see if anyone has ideas of anything to add to that list or you can just leave a comment on the post. |

My contribution to your list here. Tubemogul allows you to upload your music videos to over 15 video hosting sites at once. For my review of the site http://blog.timelineonline.org/2008...o-tips-too.html which led to my alpha version of "Start A Video Strategy" E-Report http://e-reports.timelineonline.org...eo_strategy.pdf O.K. couple of links in this reply the only one I think should be added to your list is Tubemogul.com |

This'll definitely come in handy when I start playing gigs, even before hand.
