Writer of The Month - August - Billyjson

An artist we should listen to is: There are two songs I believe everyone should give a chance, and really listen to and feel, instead of just hearing:
3x5 by John Mayer
Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

Most Inspirational Writer (Lyrically): Samuel Beam

Favorite poet/poem (published writer): To say I read much poetry from published writers would be a lie. I tend to dislike the effects that society's preferences have had on them. I'm familiar with some Frost's work though, and enjoy his poem The Road Not Taken.

If you could be any writer ever, who would you be: teh Jonas Brothas rock!!! yeahh! yeahhh!!
(had to make fun of them somewhere) My only answer for this question would be myself. Becoming someone else would take away from the journey.

Why Do You Write: To find me, to find you, to find love, hate, good, bad... and when I have found everything I'm looking for, and have no further questions for the world, I will write some more. Because I can.

Favorite word(s): Yes. No. Maybe. Nuthuggers.

Favorite technique/style to write in: Everything I write begins as barely legible scribbles on a notepad. They may be sideways, upside down, or rightside downways, but they all come together eventually. I firmly believe that sitting inside in front of a computer screen, typing thoughts straight from your head into a notepad document, kills creativity. Why work so hard to fabricate inspiration when there's so much outside, there for the taking?

Favorite Writer(s) on UG: Alex and Kent. Both are incredible writers, and both have had huge impacts on my writing. I also really enjoy reading pieces from Dan and Katherine, especially their more recent ones.

Most Helpful Critic: Though he hasn't been around lately, SomeoneYouKnew was there from the beginning, never giving me any slack, and I have to thank him first and foremost. Zach and Dan too, have been extremely helpful, and are never afraid to tell me what they really think. I would trade a thousand positive comments for just one telling me that I am shit, because that is what drives me to improve.

What do you do especially, to find inspiration: I go outside with my guitar and find something comfortable to sit on. After playing a few songs, or sometimes in the middle of a song, I'll put down the guitar and pick up my notepad. Then I'll just sit back and take everything in; the trees, the wind, the sounds, the smells, the moon the moon the moon the moon (that one's for you, Alex.) If something comes to me I write it down, if not, I just sit and enjoy nature. Suburbia does not allow a great deal of interaction with the natural world, which is why I'm excited for my move to Alaska in less than a year. I believe in the right circumstances though, I will no longer have to be outside to be "there", because "there" will be everywhere. (Or at least I hope so, being outside in Alaska gets to be fricken cold in the winter.)

Your Most Recent Work and Reason Behind It: It is called A Eulogy for Charley, and I wrote it, one, to get out of the slump I've been in lately, and two, to express dissatisfaction with the 'American Dream'. In the end though, people just took it as a comedy, which I suppose is fine also.

Tips for Newer Writers: Don't be afraid to explore the possibilities. Read others' work for ideas or inspiration, but don't let what you read dictate how you write.

What’s your goal in writing: Poetry is my gateway drug to lyrics.

Any Final Comments or Thoughts: I'd like to thank you all individually.. but that would take a hell of a long time and I still don't know many of you well. So general thanks to anyone who has read my pieces/taken the time to comment, and less-general thanks to those who have often taken the time to give thoughtful critiques.

Now, after you took the time to read all that (if you didn't, avert your eyes), I feel that I should finally reveal the answer to the great question....

The chicken came first.

Congrats, Jake!

Congrats. And we didn't all dismiss it as comedy, myself, I just thought the comedy was what gave the notion some flare.

Still, well deserved.

- although, for myself, sitting in front of the computer screen at 12 o'clock at night is the only time I have where my thoughts are relatively gathered.
I have peace at night on my own with my music, whatever music I want (when living in a house with three other woman, one aged 3 the other aged 43 and another 15, I bask in the limited amount of quiet time I have to myself) I have my books and the Internet with a disgusting array of reading material, I have all this inspiration to convey my ideas through. And heres the bit you might like, a window into the countryside that glorifies my wonderful home!
I can certainly see the wonderful effects the environment has on your writing, maybe I should expand to that process as well?

I've only been here for two or three months but this is the most pleased I've been for someone who have won this award. A writer of epic proportions. Inspirational... hemm I'm in the mood for some serious-assed writing!

thanks for the tip of the hat, my friend.
my apologies for not being around for so terribly long, but i was without net access.

sad to have missed your shining moment.
small field of candidates this time,
but winning votes with a perennial favourite like Jamie in the polls is no small accomplishment.
were there a "writer of the year", he'd win hands down.
kudos also to Parkt921k
and especially to Stu, who was nom'd during his first month of posting his writings in S&L.

if/when i have time and net access consistently,
my first priority will be to read your work since my absence.

much love, and congrats on a well deserved win.
