My point isn't that you have to smoke weed to enjoy music, but that you have the ability to. It is a damn near undeniable fact that marijuana can make listening to music more enjoyable.

I will deny your so-called fact. It made me jittery and unable to pay attention to, let alone enjoy, music.

Nah. Weed's a drug. Bad? Probably not, but a drug nonetheless.

Now let's chill and listen to The Ending Credits.

Just listen to Watershed. All of the songs have that kind of weird atmosphere.

Ghost Reveries and Watershed are full of stuff like that. Better written on GR though, if only marginally.

I guess for the artists themselves smoking pot is very helpful at times. If you are going to create something or think outside the box during your altered reality pot can be the way to go. But if you are just listening to music and not diong anything but eating chips and bitching about your sad life... then its a waste of good pot imo

^ If you need pot to be creative... Well, lets just say you probably arent very creative.

If it enhances your creativity however, I guess that's cool.

I didn't see the word "need" in his post.

So, not really a regular here. Forgive me if it's already been posted, but I just found an interview (interview itself is a video) that Mikael did with PitCam.TV, where he talked about how he liked their current lineup, the Wacken Festival, and that he is writing the new album. (We probably won't get a new album until late 2013.) And frankly, I hope it's more in that "traditional" Opeth style than in the style of Heritage.
(Heritage is a good album, just it doesn't really seem like it's Opeth. It reminds me more of a prog rock group from the '70s. I'm sure many others like it. )

Note: The first language of the interviewer obviously isn't English. He has some odd diction, but he's mostly understandable.

What it sounded like to me was a modern rock band trying to sound like a 70s prog band

True. I guess that's a better description. But it sure didn't sound like Metal.

Edit:
At least, none of the members of Opeth pulled a "Lars Ulrich" and started insisting anyone who didn't like it was a dildo and that it was all artistic and shit. The fact that they didn't has convinced me to actually buy the album when I can (only listened to the album on Youtube so far).

Agreed hard. It's not a bad record, but it wears its influences on its shoulder and is way too pointed in reminding us about them. As long as they don't put out another Watershed, I don't really care what direction they go. I like Akerfeldt's voice and songwriting, and Watershed only had one of those.

Damn. The last 11 years must have sucked for you.

I just bought Maiden's Brave New World a few weeks back, so don't take what I wrote too seriously

I used to like Opeth back when I was younger and getting into extreme metal for the first time. I still appreciate their musicianship and I think they have some great ideas, but everything after about Still Life lacks energy and consistency in songwriting quality. Heritage in particular was just a boring mess of an album for me, and the last few have only had a few good songs between them. Even so, once you realize most of the ideas were lifted from other bands like Edge of Sanity, those earlier albums also lose their appeal.

Nowadays I just sort of view them as a gateway band at best, hipster metal at worst.
