I could easily do without Dirge for November on Blackwater Park.

Really? That's one of my favorites for whatever reason.

It's actually not as bad as some people make it out to be. The beginning and ending clean parts are gorgeous. The metal parts a tad repetitive and sorta fragmented though.

I quite like Dirge for November. Don't think I've ever had any qualms with it, actually.

Agreed. But I like Opeth's brand of disorganized from the era, so it's not a big problem to me.

I've always felt BP slightly overstays it's welcome as an album anyway. Dirge seems to meander a bit much and more often than not it makes me lose interest and turn the whole thing off. I'll agree it has some nice parts though.

Seeing them on the 27th. Apparantly they ended their Heritage touring in September and have changed to a, let me say more heavy, setlist with not much more that Devil's Orchard from Heritage, which is an awesome track tbh.
Anyway the setlist has been very consistent so far so I am in high hopes that they will keep it that way. This is the setlist from saturday night:

The Devil's Orchard
Ghost of Perdition
White Cluster
Hope Leaves
Deliverance
Hessian Peel
Häxprocess
Reverie/Harlequin Forest
Blackwater Park

They're playing Burden as well on about half their shows...fingers crossed

I'd love so much to see an Opeth show with this setlist. Add in Windowpane and it'd be absolutely perfect.

That looks like a half decent setlist. Ghost of Perdition, White Cluster, Deliverance and Blackwater Park are great additions.

I got so distracted by seeing anything off of Still Life that I totally missed Blackwater Park. I will die happy once I see that song live.

(I'm still super satisfied that I saw them play Serenity Painted Death live, that was freaking excellent!)

I love that song. Honestly, I could see how the repetitiveness would get on some people's nerves, but I like the tone it gives off enough that I forgive it easily.

i wanna say some bands fail to even make one masterpiece of an album in their discography...Opeth has made three...Morningrise, Blackwater Park, and Damnation, and i've listened to their entire discography religiously(most of which i have on vinyl, except for three..Still life, Watershed, and Ghost Reveries)...of course this is all my opinion

Ghost Reveries is excellent. If you haven't heard it, you should. It's the next logical step after Damnation/Deliverance and, in my opinion, is one of their strongest records.

Actually, I'd say they've made 5 masterpieces. Still Life, Blackwater Park, Damnation, Deliverance, Ghost Reveries. I don't really count Morningrise as one, because it really isn't as well done as any of the later stuff that actually put them on the map.

Morningrise is miles ahead of Deliverance.

^ Yes. Yes it is. Perhaps solely for creativity alone though, the songwriting may actually be more haphazard than on Deliverance. Better ideas abound though.

Moonsorrow would like words with you. Every album since Voimasta Ja Kunniasta has been a masterpiece in its own right, and far superior songwriting, replay value/depth, and just material in general than anything Opeth has ever done.

Again, disagree, and see above. Still Life and Blackwater Park are pretty good. Damnation is decent. Deliverance... Well, the title track and For Absent Friends are great. Otherwise, no. GR? See below.

If it were not for Atonement and Grand Conjuration and the last half of Harlequin Forest (seriously, that song should just end after the clean meandering bits), I'd agree.

That trio completely destroys any hope that album had of being Opeth's best though. (because the first three songs are truly some of Opeth's best)

For that reason, Opeth's best record, and only album that got close to a "masterpiece" for my money is, and will always be, MAYH. It was the first and best incarnation of the style that would continue to appear [albeit with some random other new tones/"influences" added to the same general songwriting and riff construction] until Watershed.

and as to masterpieces, I repeat: Moonsorrow. They've one of the strongest, most consistently GREAT discographies in metal. And they never cease to develop their sound and songwriting prowess. But it's really an apples and oranges comparison I suppose.
