I'd say they have much more depth than Bathory though. Much more advanced in general probably.

That was my impression, though the comparison is pretty appropriate to my ear.

Can someone tips me about bands and artists that sound like the mellow side of opeth, something like the damnation album for example? It dosnt need to be in the prog/ metal scene at all. And please dont mention obvius things like steven wilsons projects.

Damn. That's actually exactly what I was gonna say. Porcupine Tree and Storm Corrosion are the first to come to mind. Katatonia has some similarities to Opeth, especially in their bleak atmosphere, but they're a very different sounding band by and large. If you're not already familiar with BTBAM, a lot of their clean passages have a really similar vibe to Opeths. Overall, once you get into their post-Colors sound, the two have some pretty stark similarities. You might also want to try out some post-rock bands like Sigur Ros. Again, similar vibe (though somewhat more upbeat), but a lot of striking differences.

Sigur Ros and Opeth are nothing alike. You should look into Camel, Comus, Harmonium and Gotic.

Like I said, the music itself isn't alike, but I get a similar vibe from the two. Sigur Ros isn't quite as melancholy, but the two end up together on a lot of playlists for me. Quote:
No. Like with Sigur Ros, the music itself is very separate, but a lot of the atmosphere (for lack of a better word; I hate using "atmosphere" to describe music) feels similar to me. Especially on their Parallax albums, given the really melancholy tone there. Maybe it's just me, but I have a couple of friend who've come to the same conclusion separately, so maybe it's not.

Katatonia immediately comes to mind. Also, Ne Obliviscaris has some nice clean and acoustic sections. They're not super similar to Opeth's, mostly because they feature pretty prominent violin work (which is rad), but I think you'd probably really like them.

I'm surprised no mention of Devin Townsend's stuff like Ghost. I know it's not exactly the same but also kinda similar. I'll also throw out Amorphis... Eligy & Tuonela, Skyforger as well but that's more like the heavier side of Opeth

Ghost is nothing like Damnation beyond the fact that they both use acoustic guitars.

Thank for telling me about kanatonia, i have heard about them, but actually never sat down to listen to them. Awesome stuff right there, god damn it, my neighbours in Sweeden has so many good bands
Cold you reccomend some more in the damnation-style? Im sure there would be many bands that that kind of music. It dosent have to be anything in the metal scene at all, it could be labeled as pop or whatever, i just want those dark, mystic, catchy, light/darkness melodies, instrumentation and arrangements that opeth has that just sets you in a wonderful mood.

Nick Drake.
And it's a little less like Damnation but Rome and Tenhi are also worth hearing.

I thought Storm Corrosion was a great release, it hit really high up for me last year. I am currently wetting myself over the upcoming obvious tour package is obvious - Opeth/Katatonia North American tour. Roadrunner Canada is slashing the price on Heritage. Czech it out:

I'm glad that Opeth will be here soon.
The reason I came back into the Metal forum is for an assignment. My literary theory teacher wants us to apply a lens we've learned to a piece of text. Anything goes as long as it's able to be criticized with one lens. He said concept albums are fair game so I'm really thinking about doing a paper over Still Life. Not sure what lens to choose though.... Not really expecting anyone to know lit theory, just thought I'd share. ![]()

That sounds pretty interesting. I'm in a lit theory class right now too, what stuff have you covered so far?

Hey guys, was wondering if you could help me out. At my work we're allowed to pick the music, as long as there's no swearing/growling so I was hoping you could name some Opeth songs without growls. I've already got some songs from Damnation on the playlist but I thought asking would be easier than listening through their entire catalogue.
