I'm surprised no mention of Devin Townsend's stuff like Ghost. I know it's not exactly the same but also kinda similar. I'll also throw out Amorphis... Eligy & Tuonela, Skyforger as well but that's more like the heavier side of Opeth

Ghost is nothing like Damnation beyond the fact that they both use acoustic guitars.

Thank for telling me about kanatonia, i have heard about them, but actually never sat down to listen to them. Awesome stuff right there, god damn it, my neighbours in Sweeden has so many good bands Cold you reccomend some more in the damnation-style? Im sure there would be many bands that that kind of music. It dosent have to be anything in the metal scene at all, it could be labeled as pop or whatever, i just want those dark, mystic, catchy, light/darkness melodies, instrumentation and arrangements that opeth has that just sets you in a wonderful mood.

Nick Drake.

And it's a little less like Damnation but Rome and Tenhi are also worth hearing.

not that damnation-y, but sounds like the sort of thing you're looking for, they're one of mikael's favourite bands too

I thought Storm Corrosion was a great release, it hit really high up for me last year. I am currently wetting myself over the upcoming obvious tour package is obvious - Opeth/Katatonia North American tour. Roadrunner Canada is slashing the price on Heritage. Czech it out:

I'm glad that Opeth will be here soon.

The reason I came back into the Metal forum is for an assignment. My literary theory teacher wants us to apply a lens we've learned to a piece of text. Anything goes as long as it's able to be criticized with one lens. He said concept albums are fair game so I'm really thinking about doing a paper over Still Life. Not sure what lens to choose though....

Not really expecting anyone to know lit theory, just thought I'd share.

That sounds pretty interesting. I'm in a lit theory class right now too, what stuff have you covered so far?

Hey guys, was wondering if you could help me out. At my work we're allowed to pick the music, as long as there's no swearing/growling so I was hoping you could name some Opeth songs without growls. I've already got some songs from Damnation on the playlist but I thought asking would be easier than listening through their entire catalogue.

Forgot about this. My class is actually literary criticism. We went over all the major lenses and applied four to one piece of our choosing (I did Lord of the Flies) and have read some criticism. Our main texts were Beowulf, Dracula, and Heart of Darkness. I'm currently working on my portfolio of those lens papers. I did Psychoanalytic, Neo-Colonialism, Post-Structuralism, and Hyper-Reality.

So, Opeth. Seeing those guys in a couple weeks. Anyone know their general set list?

I'm too lazy. That looks like a great set list. Nice variety between the last few albums.

Nice, I've never gotten around to reading Dracula. In our class we went over the theories of a different critic every class period, which got kinda hectic. We actually didn't really do any post-colonialism or any of that, which I found surprising. I've never even heard of Hyper-Reality. We didn't do any practical application of any theory in that class, which I found disappointing- I would have liked to have covered a smaller number of critics and focused more on using their theories.

I don't feel like going back to find the post this refers to, but you wanted to approach Opeth's lyrics using one of these theories or something right? What sort of critical theory do you find yourself most aligning with?

Edit: For those who have seen Opeth on this tour, how are Mikael's growls sounding these days? I saw them last year twice and his highs were sounding fine, it was more just his lows that sounded hoarse and forced.

I don't know what I would apply to Still Life. Possibly New Historicism or Deconstruction.

Hyper-Reality is part of Post-Modernism. It's essentially the Matrix. An image or falsification replacing the real. Like you exist as a real person but your forum profile, a false version of you, is more real to me. So I've entered a hyper-reality in relation to you. Something like that.

I saw them last year and the lows sounded forced.
