Layers [Experimental piece?] (GP5, GP4, MIDI C4C)

Hey guys, this is my latest one, I called it Layers because that's mostly what I did, layer instruments over each other, I've been sort of working on it on and off for a while now, basically I've thrown in a lot of my influences with little regard for whether or not it actually fitted in with the song, but whatever, I'm happy with it.

good song, though I am not certain if those basschords sound that good in reality The solo is a bit standard too.
But I really liked the rest!

Is it instrumental or has it got vocals over it?

I liked it, some of it reminds me of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 menu music .

Probably instrumental, since I'm not really very good at making vocals.

Cool song. It started out kinda Jazz sounding, then switched to metal-ish sounding riffs and a solo that seemed to be a tie between the metal and jazz sounds. Ending with a stronger version of the first theme is also cool. If i were you, i might shorten the bass breaks though.

Excellent.
That was quite epic.
It's kinda late, so I'm letting it sink in.
I'll have to do a full crit soon.
Message me back, and give me a link to this, as I may forget.
Then again, I'm not sure I could forget a song like this.

I love it. Hell of a lot of tapping though...
I like the fact you've used the bass guitar alot, and it's not just a backing instrument like in most bands...

Wow, it's really awesome.
I like at bar 32, how the strings and guitar fade in together.
From bar 41-52, the bass was a bit out off key, which I'm sure you intended, but it didn't really work for me.
The following bass riff was pretty awesome though. A nice break.
The guitar solo, while again off key, as intended, I'm sure, was really good. And the following break at bar 74 was really awesome.
The bass riff after that was really awesome, and gave it a electro sounding feel (that might just be my speakers though, but it worked).
The bass chord bit was not my favourite bit of the song, but worked to lead onto the drums taking over for a bit, until the next guitar riff. All good.
The bass riff afterwards was quite nice, giving a rather happy feeling to the rest of the song, and the synth and guitar backing it up was completely awesome.
The outro was beautiful. I loved it.
Great work.

Ah yes, the intro leads remind of The Fall of Troy.
Everything about this screams prog.
It's very well composed and nothing really appears to be wankerish aside from the solo.
Nevermind, solo's good. There's a spacy theme to it that makes it stand out.

I love how the bass plays such a dominant role, instead of being pushed back.

That outro is so dreamy and relaxing. Damn it's good.
But you should ended a stronger chord.
The abrupt stop to this atomspheric part just kills it.
I wanted moar!

Anyone, you made excellent use of motifs and layering.

9/10.

Would you like to take a look at some of my stuff?
Preferably Elonia, as it's a brand new song.

Wow, thanks a lot that means a lot coming from you dude. As for my influences, there's a lot of musicians really, The Fall Of Troy, The Mars Volta, Aphex Twin, Modest Mouse, Necrophagist, Tool, a lot really, haha, although some may be more apparent than others.

Thanks to everybody else for their crits also, very much appreciated, if I haven't already I'll crit you guys back as soon as possible.

Critting as I listen...

Tapping intro is phenomenal. Got me interested right from the beginning. Drums sounded good, in place. The Acoustic guitar got lost in the mix, which leads me to believe that this may become a problem in the song, if it's happening so early... but we'll see... Bass was good.

Second section, the notes were good, a good continuance from the section before it.

The distortion sounded good for the intro section, drums were incredible. The notes in bars 41-whenever those notes stopped were great, they added a bunch. I'm not quite sure why your tapping them all however, but, whatever. The drums, when they came in, weren't that great.

Bass/Drum thingy (I wouldn't call it a solo) wasn't bad, but it totally changed the mood.

The next riff takes the song in a more tech/prog/core area. It's not bad, and works well as a change.

The solo that followed was....OK. It wasn't bad, but didn't have anything particularly interesting going on. It reminded me of.... (please don't kill me...) Malmsteen.

The next part seemed almost tribal to me, and the chords sounded good. I think that some keyboard overlay there would have sounded good. Just a thought. The drums weren't bad, when they emerged, but you were using those cymbals a bit much

When the guitar came back in, It was really good. But, you have like 15 guitar tracks. Throw in some backing chords, to make it sound fuller. It's necessary.

The next bass/drum section was alright... but didn't really sound that great. The guitar came in, and in my head, I was just like "so?". It's not bad, but really, you can cut that section out.

Then it's just bass again, which isn't bad.... and that intro part again, which has become my favorite part of the song.

All in all, although my comments probably seem mostly negative, I think it was really good. I enjoyed it, and would give it an 8.5/10.

Would you care to crit mine?

I've noticed your compositions on the forum, and I really liked them, so it means a lot to me that someone who makes music that I enjoy thinks so highly of something I've made

I loved it! Great interaction between the guitars. Also cool to see that the bass gets the role it deserves!
The solo was very creative, not what you'd expect. Nothing more to say actually, it was just great!

Jesus! That was amazing!. Everything was perfect together, and nothing sounded out of place. The constant genre hopping makes it a very interesting song, and it never sounded like "4 songs stuck together". The bass/drum transition/break was great the first couple of times, but then on the third it sort of got a bit bland. Fantastic work!

9/10.

This is quite original, at least compared to any of the stuff i ve heard on here.
i just don't like the solo part with arpeggios. u can call me hater or whatever. and YES i can't play it, but thats not the reason i don't like it. i just don't like the sound of it.
but besides that, this song is awesome
