Der Weinende Hadnur

Never has a story in my entire life touched me as much as Hadnur's has, ever since childhood even. This story has been with me for my entire life.

Der Weinende Hadnur, this one minute glimpse into Hadnur's heart was enough to evoke such a primal despair in me, one which I rarely feel. This song successfully conjures an epic of sorrow and loss and destroys you with it in a mere minute.

I'm not huge on the doom or depressive black metal thing, so forgive me for omitting what would probably be considered the greatest sad songs, but in my opinion:

Anything by Daylight Dies puts me in a pretty gloomy mood.
A lot of Opeth's songs, especially Orchid/Morningrise era, a lot of Black Sabbath songs, and there are quite a few songs by Nevermore that all have a really sad mood to them.

Heaven and Hell's "The Shadow of the Wind" makes me tear up when I sing along also.

I'm going to go through my list and see. I'm not sure how sad some of these are overall as I'm going by what I feel now, but on most days, melancholy, doomy metal allows me to feel the sadness.

Agalloch - Not Unlike the Waves
Ayreon - 2084
Borknagar - Collosus
Dark Tranquillity - Insanity's Crescendo
Death - Voice of the Soul
Dream Theater - Space-Dye Vest
Dream Theater - Disappear
Dream Theater - Repentance
Epica - The Phantom Agony
Falkenbach - Heathenpride
Falkenbach - Donar's Oak
Iced Earth - Watching Over Me
Iced Earth - The Phantom Opera Ghost
Immortal - Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark)
Iron Maiden - Remember Tommorrow
Iron Maiden - To Tame a Land
Insomnium - Daughter of the Moon
Lord Belial - Lamia
Lunar Aurora - Findling
Ne Obliviscaris - All :p
Opeff - Entire Damnation album, Harvest, Credence, etc.
Pain of Salvation - Practically everything. If I had to pick one, it'd be Oblivion Ocean though.
Quo Vadis - Dream
Symphony X - The Accolade
Testament - Musical Death (A Dirge)
Woods of Ypres - The Sun Was in my Eyes (Part 1 & Part Doom)
Windir - Entire Arntor album.
Wintersun - Death and the Healing

"Runes to My Memory" - Amon Amarth

I'm serious. This song makes me feel so...nostalgic, so sad, but also proud of the victory of that which represents the greater good.

To mention some things that haven't been said, Voices in the Wind by While Heaven Wept is probably the saddest number off the Empires Forlorn album. Type O Negative can have some very sad songs as well, particularly Red Water Christmas and World Coming Down, off the top of my head. World Coming down is a pretty depressing album all in all. I have to agree though, Watching From a Distance wins this thread by far. I'm sure someones mentioned MDB by now as well.

Amon Amarth writes some pretty sad stuff. Across the Rainbow Bridge, also Fate of Norns if you listen to the lyrics.

Oh, and tale of revenge by Ensiferum.

+1 to A Toute Le Monde. Does anyone else think that the new version totally ruined the emotion of the song? It's not a bad version musically, but it's just much less heartfelt, IMO.

Lots of black metal has a sorrowful/beautiful tinge to it like Wolves in the throne room, Austere, etc.

Warning - Watching From A Distance album

I was wondering why this wasn't the first post in the whole ****ing thread.

Also some of the ones I usually name, but worth mentioning again

Temnozor - What the Burial Mounds Might Whisper and As a Fragment of Unseen Mysteries.
Shape of Despair - Angels of Distress
Opeth - Hope Leaves
Candlemass - At the Gallows End
Tyr - The Edge
October Tide - 12 Days of Rain
Drudkh - Sunwheel (the second half is most depressing thing ever)
Skepticism - Sign of a Storm\
Judas Priest - Living Bad Dreams

meh I'm missing plenty of obvious ones, but I"m way too hungover to think about it lol

I completely agree. Friedman's solo was also better than Drover's.

Soldier of Fortune - Opeth
Wasting Love - Iron Maiden
