Man, I haven't listened to Outre in forever.
Damn me being at my grandmother's house and this band not being on my iPod currently. ![]()

Still don't get it.
Listened to Outre. Sounds like kick drum and feedback. The entire Portal schtick is pretty hilarious though. Someone told me that they only have one gig booked at this time, the 11th of the 11th, 2011 ![]()

You probably never will get it, then. Listening to Portal while playing Call of Cthulhu (Dark Corners of the Earth) makes for some incredibly unsettling moments. |

Its a shame your virgin ears "don't get it," mini-Mag, because its some honest to god amazing guitar work. Not just in atmospheric terms, not just in complexity, not just in technicality, but from a purely musical stand point it just makes your balls drop.
Then again Magero Von Sillius the Backwards etc etc

Question: Is this the same portal that used to have a female (Or maybe its a male) clean singer? I have a demo album from a band called portal, there are growls, atmospheric, but down tempo and has a clean singer, and song names include:
Costumed In Grace Not the Same Endless Endeavors |

No, you're thinking of the (terrible) Post-Cynic Portal.

Ah! Thanks for clearing that up. I loved the stuff on their mypace you showed, and when I searched in my music library and found them and was like Cool! But sounded way too different And curious, what do you mean by "pre cynic", or "post cynic"? |

Shortly after Cynic broke up, several members formed Portal.

No, this Portal is completely unrelated. The demo you had was the post-Cynic Portal.

In '04 to like '07 they used to play pretty regularly. Same with most of the bands from the time. The entire 20 people of the Brisbane 'scene' get a bit bored of anyone regardless of who it is.

I respect them for doing what they do. They've stuck to an idea and kept the whole mystique thing going well. Watching their vids, they do indeed play some bullshit technical stuff, but I don't get the point if it just sounds like a wall of noise. I suppose atmosphere is all in the ear of the beholder, but to me, it doesn't feel unsettling, it feels like I'm listening to a TV with a broken antennae.

Its like Opera. Pull a layman off the street and he will say the viking lady is just wailing. Get a connoisseur to listen, and he can repeat every word spoken. Requires a bit of ear "training" if you will.
