Steve has always been a cool guy who just loves to play and make music. How can you fault a dude for that. Now everyone go out and watch some Vai vids on youtube to get this man some extra coin haha.

"There isn't much overdubs, and not a lot of big production."

I'm probably going to get flamed for correcting Steve Vai, but seeing as he mentioned Queen in that list and said this, I figured I may as well.

While usually most bands in the 70's just sat down and recorded at once, Brian May used to spend days at a time overdubbing guitar track over guitar track for the kinds of harmonies you hear on early Queen stuff. Though generally he's right, just figured I'd mention that.

I don't like selling my own music. For me, it's uncomfortable. Making art is a very personal thing, and is a personal statement of who you are. It's difficult to sell your art...
...I try to strike a balance between what's fair for everyone. The music industry is a changing market, and everything is continually changing. At times, I draw a line, and say "No. This is not good enough, and I don't accept". I'm very protective, and I have no desire to sell my music for anything less than what I think it's worth. You have to be practical.

That caught my attention somewhat... I don't think he's in it for the money, certainly, but how does he gauge what art is worth?

He's a good man though. The defender of aspiring musicians everywhere.

"Playing is a personal, cathartic process."

Very good practical observation, playing for me has always been something personal, something I do for myself and not for others. Although when others enjoy it it's even better.

I'd like to wish Steve Vai a happy birthday, who turns 49 today. Also, thanks for the compliments everyone.

He was a nice bloke, and I'm sure he has some worthwhile advice to give aspiring guitarists. During the interview, he certainly made some valid comments.

Lastly, I'd like to say that those making comments which pertain to phone pleasantries are somewhat confusing. As I've stated previously, I present entire conversations (as opposed to cherry picking parts of a conversation) so people can make up their own mind regarding an artist. I would've thought phone pleasantries are a less interesting point of discussion than the topics Vai touches upon, whether it be his seminar, a new studio album, 'Flex-Able''s reissue, or a new DVD. Then again, I'm only the interviewer, so what do I know?

I disagree, there are plenty of virtuosos still out there worth interviewing that are at least of the same expertise and musicianship, Govan, Holdsworth, Stanley Jordan, Al DiMeola, Eric Johnson, etc the list of wanted interviews goes on!

Personally, I disagree with your assertion that Cobain was an "astonishing musician". The man was immensely overrated, and had he not blown his own brains out, his musical worth wouldn't have been inflated like it is. He was an ok musician, and nothing more, in my humble opinion. Does anyone else think Nirvana is overrated? Or perhaps some disagree with my opinion? Feel free to share your thoughts, and feelings, as ever.

Yeah, I disagree, with both of you, Kurt Cobain and Steve Vai are both amazing musicians. People seem to have some stupid notion that technical music can't be emotional/enjoyable, but Tender Surrender is beautiful and Erotic Nightmares is great fun.

Cobain is actually my favourite musician, but you really need to "feel" his vibe. Come as You Are is my second favourite riff ever (after Supernaut), it just has such a unique mood that isn't lessened at all by the fact that Kurt wasn't necessarily the most theorised guitarist ever.

I actually own "Nevermind" and "In Utero", so I don't necessarily dislike Nirvana. I just merely feel that they aren't as great as many seem to say they are. "Come As You Are" is indeed a good song, though I refuse to credit Nirvana with the riff since Dave Grohl has admitted the group lifted it from Killing Joke's "Eighties". Cobain was a decent writer, but not an "amazing" writer in my opinion. Nirvana wrote some decent tracks, but I couldn't genuinely say they could maintain that across a whole album of material. Black Sabbath, who you referenced on the other hand, have done, especially upon their initial four albums.

but i agree that if he wasnt MURDERED i doubt he killed himself, he wouldve lived to make more music that was going to be considered boring, which nobody wants

I don't think he was a bad musician, but I do think he was overrated a bit. I like Nirvana, but I think what they did in terms of helping alternative music become popular was more important than the actual music they created.
Anyway, nice interview. Not a fan of Vai's music but he seems like a cool guy.

actually u hit the nail on the head, Cobain has admitted in the past his album was just him goofing off with his band, thats not an astonishing musician, thats a "hey the early 90's needed changing and i just so happend to fall ass backwards in a gold mine". nobody can say different cuz thats EXACTLY wat happend.

ps. he didnt kill himself, i refuse to believe it >_
