Eagles Of Death Metal Is 'Two Friends Having The Best Time Of Their Life'

Eagles Of Death Metal Is 'Two Friends Having The Best Time Of Their Life'

Since their inception in 1998, the Eagles Of Death Metal have released two studio outings in the form of 2004’s Peace, Love, Death Metal and last year’s Death By Sexy. Jesse "Boots Electric" Hughes is the band’s mainstay and musical visionary who shares the role with his best friend, Queens of The Stone Age mainstay Joshua Homme.

The band - without Homme in tow as was putting the finishing touches to the new QOTSA album - recently visited Australia as part of a successful tour down under and while in Melbourne, Jesse Hughes kindly offered UG writer Joe Matera to spend time with the band and what follows is an exclusive interview conducted with Jesse while he and Joe were having dinner. Read on as Jesse talks about meeting the “hottest blonde girl”, the Axl Rose saga, his love for Maton guitars and his friendship with Josh Homme.

UG: Touring with a band like the Eagles of Death Metal obviously has provided you with many surreal moments, what’s been some of the most memorable?

Jesse: I have a few but here’s one for you. We were playing a ladies only show in Soho and before the gig, I was walking up and down the hallway while we were setting our stuff up. And one of the hottest blonde girls I’ve ever seen in my life was standing in the door way. She was just standing there talking to her boy. So I start making eyes at her and I get a look back. Then I get the balls to talk to her and I go up and I am flirting with her but she’s not saying a word to me. So I go, ‘hey what’s up, are you staying to see the show tonite?’ And still no word. Then I go ‘so what’s your name?’ and she finally goes ‘my name’s Lloyd’. Lloyd, fuckin’ dude!! Now that was surreal.

I want to ask you about the whole Guns & Roses-Eagles of Death Metal fiasco that went down late last year and where Axl called you guys the “Pigeons of Shit Metal”?

Well it got us a lot of publicity but we weren’t the focus of it in my opinion. It was really a side note. What happened was Guns & Roses were only into their second song of their set and…now you have to understand that it was a 25,000 seat arena with only 5,000 people there and not one of them were born when Appetite For Destruction came out. And they had just got done booing the Suicide Girls, now naked chicks at a rock show getting booed is an absolute fuckin’ outrage! Anyway Axl is into the second song and suddenly he fires the monitor guy and has him kicked out of the building. And mind you, this is his best friend of 25 years! Then he says, ‘what did you think of the pigeons of shit metal? You’ve got to feel sorry for the little fellas, as they’re off the tour’. Then Tommy Stinson, the Guns’ bassist in protest at what just happened to us and who doesn’t care at what anybody says, walks off stage and Axl grabbed his bass and thew it at him. That is the truth dude. So that is more of a rock and roll outrage. To me, and I’m not going to lie to you man, but having one of my idols insult me and make fun of me from the same stage that I accepted and shared with them, is a very hurtful thing. It’s also a classless, mean thing that is beneath someone who should be of that stature. But I realized I learned a lesson, which is that people can all make the wrong choices and ruin themselves. He’s [Axl] like the white Michael Jackson of rock and roll, whose singing music in the best paid karaoke band ever. Guns & Roses really became Velvet Revolver that’s where the rock and roll went man. Then a week later Duff McKagan and Matt Sorum were introducing us at The Roxy. Touche! I really think it’s the Axl Rose Evil Knievel show, where it is, what is he going to do next? But you know… that’s what he does man.

"Now naked chicks at a rock show getting booed is an absolute f--kin' outrage."
What’s it like working with someone like Josh Homme within the context of the Eagles of Death Metal?

It’s the best possible scenario you could imagine. The Eagles of Death Metal is two friends having the best fuckin’ time of their life. And Josh is my best friend. We have a spoken and publicly acknowledged notion that the music dictates what happens. The egos get left at the door. And it’s really about making the best rock and roll we can make. When I write the music and bring it to Josh, he gets what I’m doing immediately, that’s one of those magic things that just happen for whatever reason. And I love and adore him. He really brought me here and believed in me. There are so many facets. He also voluntary stepped back out of the spotlight because this is a real band and he allowed it to grow on its own. And that’s a rare thing. While we were recording Death By Sexy he put me into rehab and drove me to rehab and paid for it in cash in advance. And where I went to rehab it was a $50,000 a month. And who visited me every day? Josh Homme. When I speak about him, I try not to go overboard, but I love the man very much and he’s part of me. I speak about him like this so I can get across what he’s really like and what he’s done for me.

Obviously Josh seems to provide that much needed stability for you both professionally and personally…

Yeah because my world is the crazy world of Boots Electric and I’m a little hot to handle. I don’t bullshit anybody. Everything I write about, I’m living. I’m not trying to create something or pretend like I’m making all this shit up. I don’t want to be different, I want to be same as Little Richard, as Keith Richards, as Angus Young or Bon Scott as those are my fuckin’ heroes and I want to make them proud. Josh is a genius, he’s a 6”5” Viking and is like the captain of our gang but Eagles of Death Metal is my vision. My final word on Josh is a man who can appreciate something from his position yet is still able to step back and let it breathe. And he’s introduced me to so many of my heroes and my biggest influences in my life.

Your guitar playing is very unorthodox and quirky?

That’s because I’m a drummer first…well a flautist really, but I use my guitar like a drum. Keith Richards has been called the laziest guitarist in rock and roll, I’m a hillbilly and I come from Greenville, South Carolina where everyone plays country and bluegrass so the open tunings is something that I understand. It all makes sense to me. I use the Keith Richards tuning because it’s easier to play in open tuning like a drum, where you can chunk it harder.

You play Australian made Maton guitars, [www.maton.com.au] how did you come to play the Matons and how important are they to your guitar sound?

I first played a Maton that belonged to Josh. When we did our very first tour with Placebo, Josh put in a lot of time and thought into what guitar I would be able to play and would be most suited to me. So he let me use and borrow the black and white Maton guitar that appears on the Queens of The Stone Age ‘No One Knows” video. So I played it and it had those fuckin’ gear shifter pickups that just fuckin’ ruled man. And immediately that guitar revved me up. It sounded exactly the way I wanted to sound. And I can stick that guitar in a Laney tube amp, in an Orange amp, in a Fender Champ, a Gorilla or a Peavey mini 10 or whatever and it’ll still kill. Every song and every lick of every song on Death By Sexy is a Maton guitar.

I have a red custom [Red Genius] BB1200, a solid body MS500 that Josh gave me and a black MS2000DLX. The guitars scream and they wail and they have a classic look to them and built by people who actually love what they do. The Maton guitars are a truly sincere made instrument. The ‘Red Genius’ has taken me around the world. I wanted a guitar that was synonymous with me and Maton has made that guitar for me. It’s such a wonderful instrument and it’s played by some of my biggest heroes including Josh Homme. Just listen to his records and those tones. Those are sounds man.

"It's really about making the best rock and roll we can make."
An integral part of your guitar sound is your use of small amps?

Yes, I like to keep it simple for myself so when we go into the studio, Josh and I pick out what sounds we want. Brian May from Queen actually once said, “big sound does not require big amplification”, and in the studio you’re capturing something and trying to create some beautiful spaces. I personally dislike overly loud amps. A Marshall may be cool for other people but for me, it is not cool. It’s just got one place for it and has got no dynamic to it. It’s full tilt boogie but that’s cool. I like full-tilt boogie but I also like to be able to get there and come back from it. With the smaller amps you can push and drive them differently and without all the added ear crushing volume, you can have a breadth of sound that is much bigger because it’s more deeply layered. On Death By Sexy I actually used an old vintage 6” inch speaker set-up. I found the thing in an electronics store. They were used by television sound mixers in the Sixties for use in a single speaker television set. It came with 6 inputs as well as an overdrive knob and aside from that a volume and a tone too. And I just plugged one guitar into it and went for it. And that’s where I get my sound.

Your solo album Fabulous Weapons is still to be released, why hasn’t it surfaced yet?

Because other albums have taken priority, it’s definitely finished but right now the Eagles is my priority and I want to experience that in its fullest. My solo album is…well I’m a country boy so it’s a honky tonk record. It’s a honky tonk rock and roll record with a hip hop sensibility, if that makes any sense. I’ve just finished writing the next Eagles record, and five days after we get home from this tour, Josh and I will start preproduction.

The music industry tends emphasize the fact that rock and roll is usually a young man's game, but because you are 35 and Dave (Catching, Eagles Of Death Metal guitarist) is 45 and older than most of these young guns, what is your view? I mean the Stones are in their sixties and still can rock harder than most of their younger contemporaries?

It is a young man’s game but young and youth is really misunderstood. Youth is an attitude. Rock and roll and youth and all those things are synonymous with that. You know what? The youngest woman I’ve ever known in my life was my 82 year old grandmother Sarah. Iggy Pop is as fuckin’ young as shit. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers are young as shit, you know what I mean? So we’re all young and that’s proof of it. Sometimes you can’t blame the industry for wanting to carbonize that shit to try and make money. That’s what they’re there for really. But it’s up us to make sure we’re doing the best we can to keep from going where it wants to go.

I thought the EODM were great live on TV once. I guess that's not really enough to justify their entire touring performance but I don't see why the got kicked off. This guys seems to act like a teenager but at the same time he said a lot of intelligent stuff and seems like a great guy.

How is it a cliche in any way?? Are there a lot of bands with that type of name that I've somehow missed? Anyway, Jesse seems really cool and when I saw them at Reading they just gave a great rock show and got the crowd pumped. The coolest bit was how they broke down 'I only want you', it sounded so much better live than on record.

Yeah Electric boots is the man. Rock and roll needs more guys like him. He's not trying to be part of a scene or trying to change the world with his music, he's just riffing away at his guitar making kick ass rock and roll without caring what other people think about it. This interview also shows how good of a guy Josh Hommes really is, paying for his rehab and all. I wish I could grow a moustache like Jesse's, I'd be getting all the ladies too if I did, lmao.

How dare this band belittle a genre like death metal which has MUCH more talent than these guys (yes I stand by that comment). I know it's not meant to, and I'm glad you guys like them so much, but that's my opinion.

It's just mainly coz I got a bad first impression of them; I was watching rage (Aussie music program) and I saw this band come on and I thought "oh sweet, something heavy" and it was that stupid "boy's bad news" or whatever song and I was severely let down.

Good on these guys for making it as far as they have, but they seem like a couple of old, perverted, mid-life-crisis talentless wannabes to me.

(Oh, and that death metal has more talent comment? Go to youtube and look up cannibal corpse "frantic disembowelment" [there's a version without vocals where you see the guitar/bass/drum parts being recorded] and you'll see real guitar/bass talent!)

Did you even read the first 6 words of my 2nd sentence? No one said they were or are trying to belittle death metal. It's done through implication and interpretation. They probably don't mean to do it, want to do it or even realise they are doing it, but everybody i've spoken to about this band has interpreted their title that way. When your band has "death metal" in their name but plays music nothing like death metal, it comes across that way.

Um, that being said, don't you just love it when the media do not put out the whole story? What Jesse said about that night when Axl kicked them off the tour seems a hell of alot more realistic to me, believe it or not. Axl needs to learn that he's not a bigshot anymore. If only he took all of his arrogance and converted it into effort. MAYBE the world could expect Chinese Democracy (although by now I don't think many people care. I know I don't)
Jesse seems like a cool dude. Someone who just wants to live a fun life.

lol when I first saw the eagles of death metal on conan obrien 3 years ago i was expecting some death metal too, but to my surprise I got something better, some good old kickass rock and roll. Plus during their performance I couldn't stop laughing from Jesse's insane moustache. And I haven't seen that little video of cannibal corpse on youtube, yet but all i gotta say is that the band sucks, the vocalist can't sing worth a shit and the music I've heard from most of their songs really suck, but maybe this video will change my opinion of them.

lol i actually dont remember anyone booing the suicide girls. when the only somewhat booing went to them was when they came out to just hold us over until gnr played. they had allready done their show once. and ive talked to alot of people that went to that concert. i know they are gnr fans but still not one saw stinson throw his bass. plus it was before the 4th song that they played.

Everyone knows that the eodm were lying. How could 10,000 people blink at the exact same time when stinson walked off the stage and all look the other way when axl hurled a bass at him? I have read everyone review to every show that Guns played this year, and no one except eodm witnessed this. The media would have ate this up if it really happened.
As far as eodm being kicked off...they deserved it. They stink. Its like rock n roll is a joke to them. Guns has made some of the biggest acts in music by giving them the opportunity to open for them such as: NIN, soundgarden, Skid Row, Faith No more etc. Why should Axl, after being supported by the best names in the business, carry on bands that sound that horrible...he probably just wanted to reserve the opening slot for bands that have potential.

Yeah i just listened to that little cannibal corpse video and it still sucks. It was an improvement form the other stuff i heard by them but it was boring and sounded like a riff from metallica's song battery or something and played over and over again with a few interludes and shit. They played it fast, but fast doesn't spell talent, it doesn't take much skill to play fast, but it takes skill to sound interesting which cannibal corpse isn't. But if you do wanna hear some fast shit with talent then listen to jason becker or something like that. I know you're probably thinking why the **** is he talking about talent on an article about eodm, because i'll admit that they don't have much talent at their instruments but they know how to make a good catchy song that's not lame and boring. It's just good old rock and roll.

Yeah I'm not really buying it anymore, plus he often tells stories about past events and stuff and then he changes them later on. Josh Hommes is the same too kind of because they'll make up stuff to the media in order to stir shit up. But I think they are doing it just to **** around and they are probably sitting at home laughing over it. I think it's just a joke and they don't take shit as serious as most bands. This kind of reminds me when the 2 guys from DFA 1979 tried telling the media that they met at a gay bar or something like that and they actually believed them lol. Also Jesse said in this interview that there was only like 5000 people at the show where in his interview with buddyhead i think he said there was like 20000. His life story also seems to be a little skeptical if you ask me and Josh and Jesse told two entirely different stories on how they came up with the name the eagles of death metal.

Yeah but what Jesse said about Axl being a dick and all is still true and we all know that. Jesse may lie about stupid stuff like this but Axl lies too, like how he said chinese democracy was going to be released in 2006 and probably all the other years prior to that. Also, Jesse is a better person then Axl because he is there for his fans. Instead of beating up his fans, cancelling shows and delaying albums, Jesse shows a true love to his fans by meeting their needs and being super nice to them. He's always willing to give autographs and he enjoys talking to his fans. I also heard that he replies to emails by alot of his fans and he often gives them free merchandise. Lets see Axl doing that instead of gouging money from his fans pockets for high ticket prices. But at least you can get the new albums from Axl Rose for relatively cheap, they are actually free to buy because there is no such thing. Axl Rose is just a pathetic wannabe washed up rockstar and he should be ashamed for turning GNR into a karaoke band!!!

People are now beginning to find out who Axl Rose really is and he doesn't deserve to have the high rock and roll icon status that he has. He should just go back to his trailer with his half inbred brother Kevin Federline.

I disagree. First of all it wouldn't be too hard to communicate with all 5 of your fans. Second of all, the ticket prices were really cheap when I saw them in November, and I was front row. $60 for a ticket these days is a steal. With tonnes of sold out shows and no new album, he doesn't sound like much of a wash up to me.

I love EoDM.

Saw them in Glasgow last month, front row, chatted to Jesse before, chatted to the bassist after. Best show I've been to.

On the GnR issue, I know that Jesse and Josh occasionally make stuff up, but that's normally obvious jokes (stupid song/album names etc). I have heard several different versions of the story, but most seem to agree that the place was desserted, Axl was the cock, Suicide Girls got boo'd, and Axl threw the bass.

I love how human Jesse seems too, every interview with him he just seems like any guy would be if they got that famous, enjoying making the Rock N Roll. None of the bullshit that so many big names have now.

And to whoever posted the thing about talent, lulz. Fair enough, amazing musicians can make impressive music. But that has nothing to do with good music. Good music should do lots of things, one of them is it should show an ability to play the instrument, but it should also be catchy, easy to listen to, have rhythm, etc. I respect amazing guitarists like Malmsteen and Satriani, but I can't listen to their music for shit. It makes me want to fall asleep. And (most) death metal stuff has nothing to do with talent, its just speed, and a pointless wall of noise.

And I think the name EoDM would be bloody stupid for a Death Metal band, they'd look like even more pretentious twats than normal. But EoDM are nothing like Death Metal. they're about jokes and awesome music, and the name is the perfect joke too.

Long Live Jesse

EoDM's recent UK tour was Sold Out at nearly every venue, Jesse still came out to chat to and take pictures with people in the queue. My ticket cost £12 ($20/$25).

Some of the band are regulars on the RekordsRekords forums too, all take photos with fans/sign stuff/caht with them.

Opinion, fine, but I'd say opinion with evidence.

EoDM > Axl Rose
Jesse > Axl Rose

(Sorry for double post)

Yeah I totally agree with you.
And yes guys like malmsteen have talent but I find his music boring to listen to too, it goes in one ear and out the other. I think guys like Tony Iommi are better guitarists then guys like malmsteen because when you hear a tony iommi riff,it stays implanted in your brain for life. The riff to sweet leaf drove me nuts the first time I heard it, I wanted more, lol.

I like how their story changes from every time about the Axl incident. Appearantly, Axl said it during the second song in the set... Then they claimed it was during November Rain, which has NEVER EVER been the second song of a set. No one in the audience saw Axl throw a bass after the bassplayer... and pretty damn good mr Rose must be if he could just go and throw a bass at people while playing the piano...
POSTED: 03/29/2007 - 03:57 pm / quote |
recliner33 :
I just found this on wikipedia so I don't think it's all that great of a source, but if it's right then it brings some closure to this whole incident:

On November 29, 2006 at Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena Axl Rose called the Eagles of Death Metal the "Pigeons of Shit Metal." Stinson took his bass off and threw it on the floor saying "Fuck you, that's it".[1] After refusing to play four songs Stinson went back on stage, and officially stayed with the band two days later. However, on December 2, 2006, Stinson posted a message: "As a matter of fact, Eagles of Death Metal were a suggestion of mine a while ago. Turns out they were the wrong band for our crowd. They were booed and did not play for as long as they were scheduled to. ... In the past I have thrown my bass. I have never thrown it at Axl or anyone else in the band nor has anyone thrown my bass back at me... yet."

So this shows that Stinson did throw his bass down and walked off stage, but it doesn't say that Axl threw it back at him.
