Wes Scantlin possesses the delicate and unique skills of the truly gifted composer.

Is that so.

Level of your guitar playing?

Me? I’d say a 9.37582.

Seriously?

I don't care what anyone says, I LIKE Puddle of Mudd. I'll admit right away that they aren't the most unique band (Wes does sound like Kurt) or the most talented, but they still do write good songs and put on a good live performance.
I think they are definitely too polite to hate but too well-mannered to be remembered for their music.

POSTED: 10/16/2008 - 02:53 pm / quote |
Axlthegreat :
Well this interview is pretty silly, asking a guy to rate his own music is ridiculous if you ask me and if he was a true artist he would never go along with this, especially rating all his stuff so highly. I've only heard a couple of their songs but from what I could tell they have the very generic simple modern rock sound ripped straight from Nirvana, a sound which i could barely stand back then and absolutely hate now. I'm not gonna bash on the guy too much though because you can tell it's a lighthearted silly interview but that reflects on exactly what music this band produces, lightweight catchy, and simple, songs which nobody will remember a couple months later.

ShadesOfNight :
Dudes seriously, your ripping on a guy for having a bit of confidence in what he does? and he does well!
i mean, if your in a hugely successful band and put yourself down all the time....you just failed at being famous.
your all blatently just jealous of the fact that he got up and did something with his life, that he loves and got something out of it, whereas your all just high school losers still sat on your asses picking holes in every situation that arises in your sad little lives.
grow the hell up and learn at least basic respect

great band btw

Oh my dear sweet lord... this article is a ****ing travesty.
1. Interviewer is a kiss-ass
2. Wes is an arrogant prick - "9s all round for my skills and stuff, guys!"
3. God does not dictate whether or not your music makes it - hard work does.
4. "I know what I'm doing, dude..." Do you Wes? Really, truly? Because this article alienated me from you quite a bit.
I like Puddle of Mudd - they've written some great stuff (check out Come Clean), but this guy is an a-hole.

Learn some humility/modesty and get back to me, Scantlin; you sicken me.

dont get me wrong im a huge puddle of mudd fan, i actually bought all their albums. but theres no way his songwriting is a 9.5 and his guitar is a 9.whatever. The songs on famous are catchy, but the musicianship isnt really good at all. I read an interview with him before famous came out and he was completely down to earth and chill. Now i guess getting back into the spotlight made him arrogant, cus he sure as hell wasnt like that about 4-5 years ago when they were a ****in great band

Believe it or not, I've met the guy and one of my friends is actually good friends with wes (his wifes sister was the girl that snuck backstage and gave fred durst their demo) and he is an awesome dude in real life.

This is a . . . horrible interview.
Wes seems like a douche. The interviewer kisses his ass, and his ass doesn't deserve to be kissed. He's never going to grow as a musician because he's giving himself little room for improvement. Honestly if you think you're a 9.whatever, then you obviously think that you are near, or at, your maximum potential.

Don't tell me to respect this guy, or this band. The only reason they are famous is because they are riding the coat tails of bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam, along with all of these other post-grunge hacks.

P.S. I couldn't even read the whole article because of the horrible grammar and Wes saying the same thing 20 times.

Uh, seriously? Can we just take everything with a grain of salt, assume the best out of people, and realize that humor does exist?

I think Puddle of Mudd is an amazing band, and he's a pretty nice guy. He was hilarious when I saw them back in June, so I'm pretty sure there was a certain amount of humor to everything here.

Seidenschnur :
Puddle of Mudd has a few decent tracks, but they will forever be known as the "way you smack my ass" band. For me personally, I consider them just another band that Fred Durst found and signed (look what happened to Staind). Remember him acting like a wigger in their first video? Not a good legacy.

I think you guys read Wes's ratings of himself out of context sounds to me like he was kidding around.Notice he said "I’m not gonna blow myself up though so hold on." before he did most of that bloating

Powerchild :
I don't think Wes is a bad dude, but I do think that it sucks for his band because he doesn't write with them. If I played in his band I'd be pissed. What he has is the Wes Scantlin band- they don't deserve to be called a group because he brings in other people who aren't in the immediate band to help him write. no wonder they sound so all over the place on their other albums. You don't need millions of people to play different things. look at Zeppelin. They had four people, and every single one of their albums was complete stylistic change, yet everyone can hear the consistency in Bonham's badass beats, Robert Plant's untamed voice, John Paul Jones' everything, and of course, Jimmy Page's guitar work. That's what he needs- is an ACTUAL BAND.

I don't really have a problem with this guy rating himself so highly - after all, he should be proud of his work, and confident in himself, but this really is a bit or a rubbish article. It doesn't seem like a very professional interview at all, some of the questions are just silly. I guess this must have been after a few too many beers...

Unique? Evert song I hear sounds like a riff from an older song. The latest on the radio sounds like ST's- I saw your mommy and your mommys dead riff. LoL

To be honest, it's less about him but the way the interview was conducted. And surely if this site wants its content to improve in quality it would examine some of the sensible comments posted here. In my opinion, the interview was biased from the start. Hell, Scantlin really didn't have any option but to answer arrogantly when most of the questions fielded his way implied that the album or song was already brilliant, amazing, perfect etc. And really, can the interviewer really say that with a straight face/100% conviction. I find that really hard to believe.

In closing, yes this site does get quite a few mindless flame topics (Fall Out Boy, for example) but if we aren't allowed to speak our mind about the misleading Chinese Democracy/Led Zeppelin reunion/Band A disses Band B but doesn't really when you actually read it all the way through articles, how's the site going to ever improve?

/end rant.

When a person asks you if your album is good, you're not gonna say it's shit, no matter how humble you wanna be.

Also, laughs and smiles are not portrayed in this text interview. He was not being serious about how he rated the band, because it's not like he could just ignore the question. He even used several numbers after the decimal point. The dude was just messing around.

I totally disagree with just about everyone here on two main points.
1. These guys sound nothing like Nirvana. And that's a good thing.
2. If you open your eyes, you can see he's joking about all the ratings he's giving himself.

I'm sick of people reading the title and first paragraph of an interview and commenting bullshit.
Anyways... haven't heard much from these guys since Come Clean, which was pretty good. It's neat to see people bringing in different musicians again. Josh Freese is a kick ass drummer. I know Splinter (Offspring) was not well received, but listen to the drums, really good. I'm off topic. Solid band!

Love the band, But i really dislike Scantlin somehow he kind of drags the band down, But thats my opinion...

And Sorry but the intervieuwer is either a really big fan or just a complete suck up.

I mean Truly gifted Composer ?

If anyone is a Truly gifted composer it wouldnt be him...

Chad Kroeger Jr.?
WRONG!
I like both bands in their own right, but just because they both have somewhat gravelly (if that's a word) doesn't mean they're the same person. They play music that is quite different if you take the time to listen to the layers and hear the lyrics and execution. Not the same.
Not a Nirvana wannabe either.

I understand what you're saying, but the article comment section isn't the place to complain about that, site feedback is. I can only take care of the comments, if you want the quality of the articles you might have to dig a bit deeper.

If you look closely at the liner notes, you’ll see that some of these guitar parts and drums and bass parts were not performed by the band but by some of the industry’s most gifted session rats.

So they didn't play all the songs on the album?

Apart from that, a nice, laid back interview, though if I hear "thanks God" or "at the end of the day" one more time I think I'll puke.
